How to pick a Egret II lock

Post by Masamune69500 »

Don't worry, I don't want to still the penny from my neighborhood's game center.

I bought two Egret II and one only has its set of key. My furnisher told me to drill a hole in the other one to replace the lock but I don't really like this idea. Especialy because I have to check the system the day I receive it and I don't want to mess it up with the driller before checking if it works.

I can hire a guy from a door lock shop for it but it's gonna cost a bit.

So does anybody knows how to pick a Egret II lock? By fortune, can I use the same key for both Egret II?

You may try that method out. Companies that design bicycle locks have eventually started making them pick-proof, but unless the locks have been made fairly recently, that method should work.

The only reason it doesn't work anymore is that they made the width of the cylinder slightly different, so a pen won't fit into it. :)

Edit: Somehow I assumed that it was this specific type of lock. If it's a different lock, I apologize!

That might work. But you might want to try the key from the other cab on the locks underneath the control panel if the pen trick fails. Once you open the panel, you've have somewhat better access to the innards of the cabinet. And the rear door on the back can also be opened with a Phillips head screw driver.

What exactly is it that you need to check with the cab in such a hurry? Does it not turn on when you connect the power cord to your wall socket and put the power switch underneath the front of the cab (right under the coin door) to "on"? IIRC, you said that the one with DeathSmiles is the one without keys, right?

I receive them next monday.
I didn't know there is an outside switch on the Egret II.
For the Neo candy, you need to open the service door to switch it on.

Thanks both of you

It's best to get access to the Egret II's coin door so that you may adjust the monitor's settings for different PCBs as they all have different RGB output levels anyways.

The PGM-based Cave PCBs like Dodonpachi-DOJ, ESPgaluda and Ketsui are notorious for having super over-bright RGB output levels from the get-go. Some folks find out that by limiting the RGB levels on those three particular PCBs, the picture is more palatable on the eyes. Your mileage may vary depending on what arcade RGB monitor you have though. The stock dual-sync 29" Nanao monitors are ace. ^_~

Plus, you find out that some classic Cave PCBs like Donpachi and Dodonpachi (and some other non-Cave PCBs) don't have a "Free Play" option built-in...so you will have to either feed the coin slot mechanism or press the handy button to credit a game from within inside.

You can get at the coin mech door lock and front door lock easily once the back is off the cab.

The problem will be the control panel locks - there's no way of getting to the back of them.

The only ones that you need keys for are the control panel, and coin box locks. If you don't have them you'll need to pick or drill the locks.

So much for my guess that the control panel locks might be of a generic variety. In hindsight, it did seem a little stupid, and there's nothingn stupid about those fine, Taito-built cabs. :D

I like how Taito had the foresight to just use four bolts & screws to hold up the Egret II control panel in place -- elegant but yet very simple. If it hasn't been removed before, the intial factory-spec torque used on them will require a bit more force to undo them. Nothing that a socket wrench can undo though. ^_~

Eventually, the joysticks and push buttons will need to be replaced, especially if you want replace them with Seimitsu parts instead of Sanwa parts. It's just a matter of personal taste.

This has been annoying me for a while, so I've checked.

My E2 uses 6 threaded plates, and 8 bolts to hold the control panel on.

Be careful if you drill out the locks. Keep the bit cool and run it fairly slowly - you don't want one to explode at you, trust me (I had a sharp stick in my leg last time).

That's bad because I think I need to remove the panel to go inside my elevator.
It was really tight with my neo candy 29.
Would you mind measuring the exact width of the Egret II with panel please?

I am training to pick the lock on my neo candy waiting for the egret II but nothing works. I tried the bic, even toilet paper technic (check youtube).

there is like eight small tip to push at different depth, I tried with very small allen key but at the best I can get one of those tip.

I really hope lock company can pick this type of lock. I will need to have the guy from the lock shop coming at the same time than the delivery truck because I can't put the egret in the elevator if I don't remove the panel and I don't really like letting it in the street for long, especially if it's raining.
At least, I don't think somebody will steal and run with it

At least the crime rate in Japan is reasonably lower than it is in the states.

Leave it outside in some of these streets unattended, and it won't be there for 30 minutes.

At any rate, I hope it works out. :|

If nothing else works, you could always try to track down a tubular lock pick. They come in different varieties, depending on how many pins are inside of the lock. They look like this:

Apparently they make picking them relatively easy, though I've never tried it before. :( One of the lock picks has to be cheaper than $250, I have to imagine.

Edit: I also found this video of some guy making a home-made tubular lock pick. Never seen this before. Worked for him at least. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6b5QFJBFAo . I also tracked down a store that sells tubular lock picks in the US, but they were kind of expensive. The shop that I found online sold them for $90 each.

Ok I called another locksmith to have the details.
It's 80$ per lock and he cannot make me new key, it's forbidden by the japanese law since 2002 because those kind of keys are for money lock.
It pissed me off because even if it use the same key pattern, I have to pay for each lock.
I need at least the two lock under the panel to put the Egret inside my house. It's already 160$ and there is at least one lock I need, the one for the PCB. I think from there I can access to the rear lock and the service lock and open them from behind.
But damned, that's expensive.

I am interested in those lock picker you found even at 90$ but I don't know if it's a safe shop. Those are forbidden in Japan, Can you put the link.

Otherwise I can always drill but I am not sure how to drill it. Do I need to drill through the all metallic lock? That's tough!!!
Or I can drill a little around until I can take it out but it's plastic, it may break.

That store seems to ship worldwide, but you'll also have to know what sort of pin number the locks in the Egrets are.

And, also, if the picks are forbidden in Japan, please do so at your own risk. :) I'm not sure how customs work in Japan, but there's the chance that they'll find out what it is and stop it from coming into the country.

On the bright side, you'd never have to worry about not having the keys to a cabinet again!

The Key is a usual one like every cabinet.

If you can help, I would deeply appreciate it

Neist,

Thanks for the link.
I am not really sure to know how to use those. I think one should use the key shape tool they provide to check the depth of the original key and then adjust the tip according to this.
Without the original tip, I need to do it by ear I guess. I will try to pick only one dip first to see if I can hear anything (it's the same lock than the candy I have)

can you not reach that bolt from inside the cab?

like if you stick your shoulders and head into the cab through the main door on your back, can you reach in with a ratchet or pliers?

if you can just undo that nut, and pop the tang(the latch piece) off....you can then remove the locks

at least you will have access to the panel until you sort the locks out

But I thought I need a key for the back door too.
In my neo candy I need one.

Anyway, the panel is removable so there is no access to the back of the lock from the back.

Do you have any experience with southord tubular pick?

I checked for the southord tubular pick, it looks nice but normaly they sell only to people with a lockshmith license. I am not sure it is worse having trouble with the custom service. I don't have the japanese nationality, I don't want trouble.
And it costs 80$ + 30 for shipping.
For the same price, the locksmith can open the two panel lock, I will break the back panel and from here, access to the other one at the front.
Any advice how to drill it, is it possible to drill around? How big should be the drilling head?

Good news,

I called my trader and tomorow there will try to take care of the lock before sending it to me.
I think they need to open it to clean it.

I am actually a middle man starting business with them for export purpose so they don't want to mess up with me. Those 2 egret II are kind of gifts for future business.
