Best PSP games..

Post by Strider77 »

I've recently started giving my PSP some love and was wondering what folks thought some of the best games on the system are.

My list includes these:

Macross Ultimate Frontier
God of War
Metal Gear

Looking for more stuff to get ect.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Ridge Racers/RR2 - simply not enough love for these - they're beautiful, fast, affordable and fun, and have excellent music (if you like chilled sexy jazz/electronic music)
Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke - a mix of Tenchu, an action RPG and an arcade puzzle game. NEAT concept. One of the best on the system!
Tenchu 4 - OMGGGGG, and nearly as pretty as the Wii version
Tenchu 3 Portable - with all the extras from the Xbox version
DJ Max series - similar to bemani, very hard, very fun, great korean music. Clazziquai edition is my personal favorite. Full English/Korean/Japanese menus.
Ys Seven - one of the better action RPGs out there, period
Ys I&II Chronicles - great port of Eternal/Complete with a fully live, brand new soundtrack
Brandish - full remake, very playable deep dungeon explorer
Lumines 1+2, Gunpey R - good puzzle action. I went for the JP versions over the NA editions.
Legend of Heroes VI series - all three parts.

and more. :) This is just off the top of my head. There is so much on the system. It's my main console these days. Lots of Falcom stuff for it coming out.

Might as well get the snarky "emulator" comment out of the way before someone else does. :P Back on topic...

I picked up Half-Minute Hero last week and have been enjoying it quite a bit since then...also the Persona remake a little ways before that (hoping to death for a "complete" redux of the second one). The ports of Disgaea, Valkyrie Profile, and the Sting RPGs are good, as are the Dracula X Chronicles; Darkstalkers SF Alpha 3 and the Power Stone games also play well, though for the first two you'll probably want some sort of d-pad mod. Shooter-wise you've got the Konami collections, the Soldier collection, Space Invaders Extreme...Crush is a nifty puzzle/platformer, and while I'm not a big Ghouls n Ghosts fan the PSP entry is pretty highly regarded.

Badman, Disgaea (1 before 2, if you do), and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite are my most played PSP games.

it's been modded as of last week and now has a 8 gig stick.

I was curius about the gundam games on the system.... or the more off the path yet still good titles.

I agree with all the games listed so far. I'll add Persona and Patapon.

Wild Arms XF is definitely one to look into if you like srpgs. The story is whatever, but the gameplay is distinctive and interesting.

As for less obscure titles:

Disgaea seconded. Very fun port. I think I'm about half way through Disgaea 1, and am enjoying it enough to look forward to Disgaea 2.

LOTS of other rpgs worth checking out, of course.

Besides what's been mentioned, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, Gradius Collection, Salamander Collection, Parodius Collection, Final Fantasy Tactics (retranslated), and Prinny (if you're VERY masochistic.)

And through emulation:

- The whole Genesis library.

- The whole CPS/CPS2 library.

- A lot of SNES games.

- Most of the PSX library (R-type Delta, G-Darius, Einhander, Gradius Gaiden, sexgarsm!)

and much much more.

I like Wipeout Pulse the best on PSP. The graphics are a huge step forward from Wipeout Pure. It is indeed quite shameful to forget considering I like Pulse a lot (despite the few number of tracks.)

I haven't played it yet but Hammerin Hero looks wonderful. Also, the Castlevania remake is pretty good.

Besides Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins (and its import-only "Goku Makaimura Kai" upgrade, which I bought on sale from Play-Asia), there are several.

I find Every Extend Extra to be captivating. It's amazing that a simple concept was taken by Q and "Q-ified" to a very nice result.

While I agree that the Darkstalkers and Power Stone Collection games are nicely done, I sincerely hope that when you play them, you've got something to distract you from the ludicrously long load times on both of said games. Actually, Capcom's 2 collections for the system are quite nice, too. Capcom seems to really do the system a favor, all around.

I'd still love, love, love to find someone in the Detroit area who could help me mod my PSP emulation and new software, but so far, haven't had any luck.

::sigh:: I promise to buy them lunch!

It would probably be in my top 5 to purchase if I still had a PSP, actually. Yes, I've never played SotN, you may begin firing.

I have and will vouch for the ones in bold. I'd throw in Bomber Man (surprisingly old-school, surprisingly fun!), Castlevania X Chronicles (killer package), and the PC Engine Best "Soldier Collection" - good stuff.

Did this see a US release, or is what's out there in English? I'd pick this up for sure.

Anyone hear if the Lunar remake is coming to the US or not? Looks like a mash-up between the PSX/Saturn versions (FMV clips look the same), and new design (more realistic characters, etc). I'm a major Lunar fan and would own that in a heartbeat if it saw a US release or the JP release had an English mode (English text, not so concerned about the voice dub).

I think XSeed said they were localizing it.

Gamestop actually already has it up for pre-order, though I don't think the release date they list has been officially confirmed.

To the best of my knowledge this one hasn't been announced for the US, and neither has the Brandish remake - no idea what sort of English options are available, if any. Figures that we get the lousy Ark of Napishtim and Legend of Heroes ports, and the rather meh Gurumin, not to mention the poorly-received DS Ys 1 and 2, but not the stuff that's apparently good.

Crush is one of the best puzzler style games i've ever played, an often over looked game - the art style doesn't help, but has a surprisingly decent story to it too. The puzzles themselves are WTFOMGBBQ! levels of amazing pretty darned quickly.
Pixel Junk Monsters The PS3 version now on the PSP - great port and a very good Tower Defense game.

Super Stardust Portable Though the main mode is a little long in the tooth, the Impact mode is amazingly addictive and is well suited to short burst gaming.

Grand theft Auto : CW Hires and retooled version of the DS game - a hell of a lot better than it has any right to be.

Prinny - can i be the hero? Can be quite frustrating, but nice to see good looking platform action on the PSP :)
Megaman Powered UP ... though this is also a good looking platform remake of Megaman. Not sure this is the right western title.

Pirates! where did my day go?
Final Fantasy Tactics where did my year go?

Hot Shots Golf 2 it's pretty much the ultimate handheld game - quick fire and rapid rounds, it's built for my morning commute. Easy to play, hard to put down.

Wipeout Pulse Much much better than Pure - looks great, plays great - even has a photo mode like it's HD cousin. :)

Puzzle Quest a melding of RPG and puzzle, level up and fight monsters ... at bejewelled! :)

Metal Gear Ac!d 1/2 Card + Turn based strategy - a whole lot better than it should have been!

@FRO - Just noticed this, but apparently if you have access to the Japanese PS Store there's a demo up of the Lunar remake. (EDIT: Also stumbled across a preview video.)
