Actually, I really just want that to happen. All the girls and lolis and currentanimetrendsDAMMIT make me feel all weird and alone, because I'm female. And of course, most shmup players are guys, and in Japan, the guys tend like that kind of thing so... There will never be a shmup with loads bishonen in it.

No, I don't want yaoi, I don't like my anime/manga/videogames that way, exactly. O_o;;;

I agree with you there. While I dont mind cute em ups in general I do wish there wernt so many of them especially for doujins, thats why im so looking forward to Crimsom Clover.

Joking aside, when it comes to loved ones the easiest part is the money. Under the assumption that your loved one has her own income you do the following:

. Determine how much money you need per month to pay for the household. Let us call this sum X
. Have three bank accounts.
1. Your own
2. Your partners
3. A common one.
. Based on the ratio of your income you decide how much each one of you needs to put into the common account to meet sum X.
. Setup a transfer of this sum the day after you get paid so you don't "see" the money :D
4. All bills and necessities are paid from the common account.
5. Whatever is in your account is free to spend, likewise whatever is in your partners is free to spend.

So when your partner comes home and says: "look at this fantastic dress I bought for only 700USD"
all you have to do is smile and say it looks fantastic :D

Having a separate bank account won't stop the nagging of a loving partner...

My wife loves the amount I spend on shooters. She uses it to justify blasting cash on clothes, shoes and booze...

For the people that don't seem to "get" it, I usually explain that it's like Guitar Hero/Rock Band in a way. In both those games and shmups, you can just play with the sole objective of completing the game, which admittedly gets boring very fast. However, the real meat of the game is digging in trying to get as good of a score or rating as possible and to try it with higher and higher difficulties, with one of the highest achievements being the perfect run (1CC in shmups, FC in RB/GH). And shmups also have their own "patterns" that you can follow in order to most efficiently complete the levels. Hasn't won me a lot of converts to the genre, but it does seem to make them understand exactly how I can spend hours playing a game that would only take 15-30 minutes to finish (with credit feeding of course).

I decided to bump this old thread because I'm a new user here and I decided to share with my experiences when it comes to explaining my hobby to my friends and family.

My brother watches me play shmups whenever he's taking a break from World of Warcraft. He knows what I'm playing, since he's the one that showed me that "HARDEST BOSS EVER" video on Youtube and did extensive research on the game. He tends to harass me whenever I'm talking about buying a new shmup, as he sees them as short games with no replay value. I told him I was saving my money to buy a 360 (should I get a refurbished one?) and Deathsmilies once it gets released in America. He responds by saying that I was pretty much buying a next-gen console to play 1 game, and it was a waste of money. Since then, my parents have been bugging me about the importance of saving money, as I don't need those new games. My brother is a hypocrite though, seeing as how he bought a new computer (Gaming PC; 4 gigs of ram, quad core, high end video card, etc) to play WoW at higher graphical settings, a higher resolution and higher frames per second. I'm still buying a 360 and Deathsmilies though.

My parents don't often watch me when I'm playing video games, even though I play games in the same room they watch DVDs, typically at the exact same time. I guess it's because they don't speak English AT ALL, so it's incredibly difficult for me to explain it to them in a language they would understand, and they seem just as uninterested in video games as I was before I started playing shmups. They also don't allow me to order anything online, saying they don't want me playing video games all the time and that I could play games on my computer.

My aunt knows what video games I play, and she doesn't approve of it either. Just like my brother, she deems them short and boring, with no replay value. Whenever she decides to talk about shmups, I pretty much just shut up completely, since I'm tired of explaining to her and my family why I like the games so much.

My friends.... I only have 1 friend that plays video games, and he plays Team Fortress 2 all day, dismissing shmups as "Too hard for him." The rest of my friends are into anime, sports, manga, or just listening to music. Whenever they bring up shmups on Aim, I can do little more than link them a Youtube video. They simply go "That's nice," in complete disinterest. Another friend tends to link me all kinds of Youtube videos that tell a tale of how playing video games has ruined someone's life, and that video games are pointless....

Hope you enjoyed reading my experiences and I'm sorry if there are any grammar mistakes in my post.

Shop the core.

I don't even try explaining shmups to anyone that isn't already in the know. If anyone asks about the cabs I just tell them they're for Ms. Pac-Man and Street Fighter. I did bring Mushi Futari to my parents' place when I was out there for Christmas and everyone was just like "wtf?"

I tried talking my brother into trying some new shmups for xbox360. He doesn't have the time or attention span for regular games these days so he wants something that he can just pick up and play for 10-20 minutes at a time. We grew up on Life Force for the NES but his problem with today's games is that "they don't have epic space battles or evil aliens, it's all just dodging dots..."

Maybe I'll get him a copy of Raiden 4 anyway and see if he likes it, or just wait for Deathsmiles to hit NA.
