hi team , i want to get a TATE setup going for SHMUP's as im itching to play them and havent played in a while.......i got a Astro but cant be bothered rotating it everytime i play a SHMUP.
what are my options ? , im after something half decent not just get it going with a pile of s*it
apparently 4:3 CRT TVs are not down here anymore (unless second hand which i dont want). You can only buy Plasmas , LCDs , PC LCD TVs etc
i already tried DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou [PS2] on my Plasma and looked like someone was joking with me , it looked terrible. My Plasma cant do 240p , but somehow displayed it......... i guess by resampling the resolution to 480i.
s8n question , what SHMUP got you into SHMUPs ?.........im an old schooler , R-TYPE bi*ch

Naturally, if you've got an XRGB-2/XRGB-2+/XRGB-3 upscan convertor with said Japanese RGB cable coming from your PS2 and plugged into a VGA/SVGA CRT-based monitor, it will look light years better than on a LCD or a plasma TV monitor setup. Or if you have a handy Commodore Amiga 1080/1084 14" monitor, it will gladly accept the true low-res spec and still have the scanlines for completeness.
Or just pick up an NEC 29" XM-29 or the XM-29+ variant RGB monitor and play your favorite tate games on it. Check your local Craigslist or eBay or even list a WTB thread for one in the Trading Section of Shmups.org.
Some folks buy two candy cabs: one for tate PCBs & the other, for yoko based ones. Or get an Taito Egret 29 or an Egret II candy cab...the monitor rotational capabilities of both are so easy that you can spin the monitor either in tate or yoko with just one hand.

+1 for the XM-29 series.....amazing monitors that accept just about any signal/resolution you can throw at them
they are square on all sides so its easy to put on its side, and it even has handles/handholds on the side so its super easy to pick up and flip....super easy if you can lift 150+lbs. that is
check local buy and sells or craigslist

How about having your cabinet permanently in TATE, and play everything else on your TV.
