I believe Sega Model 2/3 stuff is medium resolution only, like original Zero Gunner and Pilot Kids.

Re: shmups that run in medium res?
There are Sega Model 2 PCB kits of Zero Gunner that came with the supplied Jamma harness to play on a 15kHz candy cab setup. I saw one sold with said Jamma harness + USA full sized marquee + original arcade paperworks on eBay a couple years back. It sold for over $200.00+ easily.

Scramble Spirits (System24) and the other "shooting games" on said hardware. Gain Ground and Crackdown specifically. Doesn't fall into the western categorization, but does the Japanese.

I've heard those System 24 disk drives are usually broken. Can't say I know of anyone who owns one. There was a Super Masters Golf in town for sale cheap but I heard you can't just program a new floppy to run games on those though. There went my idea for Gain Ground.

Does anybody know what's with Scramble Spirits in MAME? It runs at 30 fps for me for reasons I can't really figure out (processor speed is not one of them), and it causes problems like invisible player sprites when a player respawns.

Re: shmups that run in medium res?
You can use a standard floppy drive, at least my copy of Scramble Spirits does. I have four System 24 games at the moment. For Gain Ground and nearly every other game you need both disk and security chip (68000 with battery). However, the Japanese version of Scramble Spirits and all versions of Hot Rod DON'T have a security chip, just a standard 68000. So if you were to get a PCB like Super Masters Golf you could convert it into Scramble Spirits with just a backup of the disk and two ROMs. Hot Rod obviously needs a control board and steering wheels.caldwert wrote:I've heard those System 24 disk drives are usually broken. The ST-V cart of Raizing/8ing's Soukygurentai runs at 15kHz. Looks & plays great on a low-res arcade monitor.

Re: shmups that run in medium res?
Medium Resolution is 25khz, Standard is 15khz.
Sega Model 2/3 is Medium, so is Sega System 24.
Soukyugurentai is on ST-V and ST-V is standard resolution.
A lot of the old Atari stuff from the 80's uses it, but none of that stuff is JAMMA anyway if I recall. Narc is about the only one that I would really be interested in from that era myself, however obviously it is not a shooter.
Several of the multi 1000-in-1 and other multiple game boards like those support all 3 resolutions as well.
Other than some of the Sega Model 2 and 3 stuff, honestly there isn't much of anything that is medium res that is really worth most people's time, shooter or not. Dave_K. and GaijinPunch pretty much mentioned the only shooters that are medium that I'm even aware of.

Re: shmups that run in medium res?
It's interesting to learn that William's 32-bit based Narc PCB was a medium resolution board. Did you notice that the actual Narc cabinet came shipped with a smaller medium-res monitor? Altogether, a typical Narc PCB setup consists of several seperate boards all interconnected by wired looms and wasn't even Jamma standard anyways. Of course, a Jamma harness adapter could be incorporated into it for ease of hooking up to a dual-res candy cab like a Taito Egret II and the like.

Re: shmups that run in medium res?
Border Down was med res in the arcade, like Zero Gunner 2.
I wonder why these 2 NAOMI titles were that way. To save money on the monitor for these particular games?
Anyway, these 2 games are why I have a Dreamcast, which can run them in High Res.

Re: shmups that run in medium res?
??? I have never heard about any Naomi stuff being anything other than Low and High...definitely never heard Medium out of anyone on that, and especially on those 2 titles. Are you sure they run in medium? Where did you hear this from?antron wrote:Border Down was med res in the arcade, like Zero Gunner 2.

That would not be saving money; unless the owner had a tri-sync monitor, they would have to hunt down a medium or a low/med to run it in that mode in the first place. So that doesn't even make any sense why Sega would even offer that as an option.
Can someone else confirm that these 2 games run in MEDIUM resolution, or that they even offer it?
Naomi can run those in High was well, Dreamcast versions are also cheaper.

Naomi is 15k interlaced (low res) or 31k (hires/VGA). Not medium res.

Re: shmups that run in medium res?
I guess someone should let the KLOV know they have this wrong.
http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=12325
http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=12697
both Virtua Tennis games are listed as Med there too.
and that bad information has made it into wikipedia as well:

There is a LOT of stuff on KLOV that is wrong. I contacted them about a year or so ago before they started making all the changes to the layout, b/c I was inquiring about additions and changes that I had submitted well over 6 months ago still not being in the database, and was told that they were behind and no telling when it would be accepted, as well as other numerous excuses about things. I even offered to volunteer to help speed things up and go through the queue and was turned down. I gave up on helping that site any way, shape, or form after that. They can go off and take the time to redo the layout and all this other crap, including making sure all the newest DDR games are listed, and that there is a field to enter your high score for a game or it's serial #, but they can't even be bothered to correct what they have up there already, including crap like this? There are tons of games up there that have the wrong raster type as well, and control specs.
Honestly I would hope that one day KLOV actually gets it's act together, as it could be so much more than it is now. It's great for general information, but don't take it all as truth. http://www.arcade-history.com/ is much more correct as a whole than KLOV has ever been, despite using MAME detail for some/most of it's info.
Nothing on Naomi is medium res, only standard (low/15) and VGA (high/31). Pretty much the only medium res games out there have been listed above. Not a huge amount otherwise.
I don't have a Wiki login, otherwise I would change it myself. There is a lot of things wrong on a lot of Wiki pages, nothing new. At least an individual can change those.antron wrote:and that bad information has made it into wikipedia as well:
