Batman Begins

Post by Ord »

So have you seen it yet? I fucking loved it! Batman Begins is VERY reminicent of Frank Millars "Year One", gritty and dirty. I never liked Tim Burtons take on Batman and as for Joel Schumaker....well don't get me started!
A fantastic movie that really shows off "The Dark Knight" from the comic books. It's even made me like Batman again!
Personally for me this is one of the greatest superhero movies ever made (along with Hellboy and The Incredibles).
Opinions?

I haven't seen it, but I have one question. Why the hell is Batman driving a black Hummer? The Batmobile used to look so cool...

^^^When you see that hummer in action, you'll realise that it is one very cool Batmobile. :)
Seriously, I think it just makes it a little bit more realistic that some of the batmobiles that were in the comics. I guess the theme of the film is that although this is a superhero movie, it's very much set in the real world.

The batmobile looks like that because it's the first one that Batman ever got. In other words, this is a prototype that got refined over and over through the years. IIRC, the animated series showed how it started with Lucius Fox putting the thing together for the caped crusader.

I saw it on wednesday night. I really enjoyed it; It's easily my favorite Batman movie (although some of the others don't offer up much competition). I personally liked his other Batmobile better, but the way he gets it makes sense.

I thought it was odd when halfway through the movie, I had no idea who the villian in it was going to be. He hadn't been shown in any of the previews I had seen, which was pretty cool. It was an interesting pick, too.

I didn't hold much hope for it, even though good director, good cast etc...

I just thought the trailer looked a little tame and with the glut of comic book films these days I reckoned it could have got lost in the summer blockbuster madness.

Eating my words now that every review of it has been excellent and a couple of my mates saw it and are geeking out about it. Looking forward to seeing it now.

It rocked. Its better than all the other Batman films (including Mask of the Phantasm, so that I'm actually saying something) combined.

Yup, I remember that one, that was a good episode. Another good "regular guy" episode was the one involving a guy who was on the run from the Joker for years because he yelled at him for cutting him off in traffic.

Glad I never bothered to watch the Shumaker flicks, this one looks so much better.

Yeah, I loved that episode. Good stuff.

I also loved "The Man Who Killed Batman"... damn, it was just awesome.

Actually, I can't think of any of those Batman the Animated Series episodes that didn't kick at least a little ass.

Oh yeah, and the bad guys are all cheering him, that was a good one. IIRC he was a nerdy guy which made it sweeter.

Agreed. Glad the main exposure I have had to Batman has been the Tim Burton flicks and the animated show. Of course Cartoon Network doesn't seem to show it anymore, probably moved it to Boomerang.

I still haven't seen Begins, I have heard some disappointement with it. A co-worker said the fight scenes were really choppy but that seems like a small gripe as long as the story is good.

The best Summer blockbuster I can remember. Superb film with everything going for it - acting, action, writing, directing etc. Everything is from the topmost of drawers.

As for the Batmobile - out of all of the film designs it is the only one that makes any sense. Batman would need an ATV that could do the stuff that it does in the film. The other Batmobile designs were just shitty plastic, this one is real and will not be changed in this trilogy.

Also, I still think they should make a Batman movie based on "The Dark Knight Returns".

Some of the stage scenes were made 1 mile from my old house in Bedford, England and my mother was supposed to play a background person. She was unable to attend her screenshoot due to being ill in Greece and missing her planned flight home putting an end to her movie career

I want to watch it just to see how Gotham translates to the screen when I know that the inside of the building usually looks like this :

Yeah... That is like my only problem with the film. It has that really bad cut-away fight scene gimmick going on to hide the violence I guess. All it did was make my eyes tired trying to follow it. But some fight scenes we're still very well done.

Excellent. This movie and the original Keaton/Nicholson flick are the only ones in the series not to suck. Bale was a great Batman and for once a blockbuster didn't insult my intelligence with an unbelievable plot with holes big enough to drive a tank through. I also appreciated the consistency with the original movie and the lack of unbelievable escapes from death that some movies heap on in abundance. Well worth the money (for once).

Best Batman movie ever, second to only the Adam West Batman movie. That scene where West had to run around with a bomb around the docks is easily the greatest moment in cinema history.

I liked it.
It had the dark & dramatic theme of the 1st Batman film with Jack Nickolson (my favorite of the lot)

Favorite part was in the beginning when they were training on the ice mountains.

Saw it today. I liked it. I am going to list it as my second favorite behind Michael Keaton's with the Joker. Christian Bale is a cool batman.

Well, they changed who killed the Waynes... otherwise, yeah.

Yea, there's a bunch of different things in it; Ra's Al Ghul is Asian, Crane is now heading Arkham, and a few other things. But the way I see it, it's like that new Spiderman series that came out 3-4 years ago -- it's a re-telling.

Actually LoneSage, RAG wasn't Asian (didn't you remember the fight in Wayne Manor)........don't want to say too much to spoil things........

Just to comment on how the movie kept the plot close with the comic books, the "real" killer of Batman's parent was Joe Chill, as Batman Begins portrayed it. Hollywood rewrote Bat-history to make the Joker the killer for the first movie, but BB looks like it wants to follow the comics scriptwise. In comic lore (I think it was Year Two) Bruce, who has sworn never to use a gun to fight crime (becuase of his parents), does take up a firearm to kill Joe Chill......................

SPOILERS

but just as in the movie, someone else beats him to it. This person was the Reaper, who was a great enemy that they just left out of the movie completely (this is the unknown assassin of Joe Chill). After killing Chill, the Reaper proceeds to whoop Batman bad. I guess adding the Reaper to the movie would have been too much for the screenplay, so they just left him out alltogether. By the way, Todd McFarlane did the art for the reaper story, and it's a great read if you can track it down.

Wait, I'm confused now :( The stuff I said was in the movie yet wasn't like it in the comics.

I'm pretty sure Ra's was Arabic or something in the comics, I could be wrong.
