Some new Xbox Live Japanese indie game called Green Island. It looks like ass but is a pretty cool little puzzle/platformer for 1$.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I'm currently playing the hell out of Star Ocean 4 and having a ball. Finished the story in normal mode and the game has now opened up and got better. The story was turd and the characters alternately tollerable and horrid but the core gameplay and battle system keeps me entertained.
I love playing JRPGs with a wealth of content as I find myself getting really absorbed in the most menial tasks. I'm currently about 20-ish in the colosseum with Edge and I have every other character, the team and the survival mode to play. I just poked my head into the first bonus dungeon and got destroyed so I need to work in the last area for chests and items and start having a look at the synthesis system.
I fully intend to complete most post game content before moving on to the next difficulty level.
The battle trophies are, however, insane. Two characters have a 'kill 30,000 enemies' requirement, one a 'play for 10 hours in battle', one a 'kill last secret boss in less than 5 mins', etc etc. My first encounter with the story last boss lasted about 50 minutes and there is a trophy for doing it in less than 5!
I've also been putting some time into Sacred 2 in my quest to take at least one of every class to the end of Niob. I now accept that I won't have anyone at lvl 200, at least not any time soon, as the game content doesn't support that sort of grind. You can finish the end game very comfortably at about 100-110 and then everything starts to diminish. This game really needs a few more difficulty levels, especially a really hardcore mode of possible one hit kills but immense exp rewards.
I finished and 200/200 Puzzle Quest which was very rewarding and entertaining and I would quite like the dlc for it.
I've also been dabbling with M&M 4-5 World of Xeen which so far has been incredibly satisfying. One of the most instant old school CRPGs I've played. I hope that the fun continues!

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Been continuing my grinding on Star Ocean 4 and having a ball. Finished up my normal playthrough as far as killling each of the extra bosses goes but keeping that file open for battle trophy grinding and working on some post game item creation. I'm working on a log of all weapon data in the game and a few of them are beasts to create.
I've also started up a new game on the next difficulty setting and I'm working on 100% quests, chests and item creation. Adds a lot of slow exploration to the game and makes it more sedate. I'm not using guides so hope I don't miss anything important!
Also really enjoying World of Xeen. I've explored my first dungeon and tower and I'm now trying to take back another town from the forces of evil. I found a pyramid to take me into M&M5 but one fight and one death later convinced me to carry on exploring the first game before I transfer across. Certainly the most enjoyable first person old school CRPG I've played so far.

Playing The Warriors - Street Brawl, out on XBLA last week - anyone who likes the film and beatemups will enjoy it I'd think, although it's very difficult since the enemies aren't quite as forgiving as ones in classic brawlers and will happily nail you out of sync in all directions.

I played about 20 - 30 credits of Plump Pop this morning, the games super hard but i still kept persevering. I only got past the 1st boss a couple of times and barely scraped onto the default scoreboard

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
If the battle trophies in SO4 are HALF as tedious and numerous as the ones in TTEoT, I see no less than 600 hours being spent getting them all. I'm sure I'm eventually going to play the game and being the completionist that I am, will likely grind out every single one, like I did in SO3 (it's really not nearly as satisfying as it should be >_>).
I'm currently in "the void"; That point where you just finished a game probably a fair bit more quickly than you intended, and instead of instantly buying another game, try to go through stuff in old games you never got around to doing (and usually realize why >_>). Btw, Wet sucks. Don't buy it

Started playing through Gears of War 2 with my brother last night. We played for 3 hours straight and got up to the point where you pilot the metal slug... I mean, Centaur.

Night Slave. Damn fun, but really slow paced so far.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Tried Zombie Apocalypse's demo. Decided it was poor and went back to Geometry Wars 2.
I've also been messing with this Keroro platformer for DS, along with 7th Dragon, which is a really good Etrian Odyssey-like RPG and I hope for a localization. It's Sega though, so ( ´_ゝ`)

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
There's been quite a few good ones coming out lately, but right now it's Disgaea 2 PSP that's taking up most of my time. I wasn't planning to get ODST but ended up with a copy anyway, and I've enjoyed the relatively short time I've spent on that. Aside from those, I also got Shadow Complex recently (highly recommended) and Scribblenauts (a bit of a disappointment, but still interesting for a while.)
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Puzzle Bobble 2, Bonze Adventure and Elevator Action Returns from the UK Taito Legends 2 pack are keeping me entertained this week. I don't think I'll ever get tired of PB2.

Melty Blood Act Cadenza.

I just picked up Retro Game Challenge. I'm not that far but it is really fun so far.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Pinball Hall of Fame: Williams Collection for the 360.
I had forgotten how easy Medieval Madness and TOTAN actually were. Getting to and completing the final battle in TOTAN is a friggin joke. At least MM makes you work for it.
That being said...holy crap at some of these wizard goals. Most are relatively easy, but I don't think I'll ever have enough patience for the Pin*Bot and Sorcerer goals.

No played no 3 but this one has 900 battle trophies, 100 for each character.
Some of them are obscene! I don't think I'll get 100% but I might try for 90%. Considering you can finish the game with between 4000-8000 kills in total, the prospect of getting 30000 kills with one character alone on TWO different characters sounds beyond me.
Just nearing the end of the story section of my second playthrough but taking some time to grind some levels due to the increased difficulty. Crafting some xp gain gear and hope to make a push shortly.
I seem to be on track for my intended 100%s but it will take a long long time before I can be sure. Will be a happy man when I see those achievements pop.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I'm trying to play Fable and Super Paper Mario. I'm currently not good at progressing in either of the games though... haven't played them for a while. Guess I will play Fable this week. But it's soooo laggy when you play it on the Xbox 360. Backwards compability my ass..
Oh well. Next up is Kingdom Hearts. I hope that will be a more pleasant experience.

Some Bubble Symphony last night. Damn, it's addictive. Only slight niggle is that some of the backdrops are over-colourful and lead to me clearing a screen when I really don't want to, as I'm a second or two noticing a decent item appearing. Great game though, not really sure why we never got along first time around.

I've been playing more Tetris: The freaking Grand Master.
And NetHack. Ascending in this game is probably the equiv of becoming a TGM3 Grandmaster or TGM2+ Grandmaster.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. Which is probably my GOTY. I actually played through the game on acolyte, and then played through it again immediately on warrior, and I can't even remember the last time I've just blown through a several-hour game like that twice in a row. It's strange, too, because I really kinda hated NG2... too many cheap tactics and annoying shit strewn everywhere. Sigma 2 isn't as tough, but it's a hell of a lot more fun.
