Best Shmups on the Sega Saturn? Also, a question.
Hello all, I'll try and keep this short. I own a import PS2 and almost every single import PS2 Shmup, as well as all of the Shmup collections on the PSP (Salamander, Parodius, Twinbee, etc.). So, with recommendations, please don't use any that I already own, such as the Deluxe packages like Salamander or Gradius, Strikers II and Gunbird (have them on PS2), or Donpachi & dodonpachi (I have them for my PS2 as it can play import PS1 games as well).
So, I finally bought a import SS lot off of ebay 2 months ago for a great deal, which included 5 Shmups: Radiant Silvergun, Battle Garegga, Batsugun, Gunbird, & Soukyugurentai Otokuyo.
So, 2 questions:
1. What are the best Shmups for the SS I don't own? Either on SS or in my PS2/PSX/PSP collections?
2. I love the PSP collections and I know most of them are available on the SS as well. Is it worth purchasing them again? I know playing on a console is much different than on a handheld, but is it worth a re-purchase?
Much thanks!

Actually, I suppose this could also be a WTB topic, but this isn't the Trading Station so >_>

Controversially I am going to say "The Game Paradise". Its polished and sparkly and does a lot of things right technically. It has charm.
It came standalone but also a SE came out with a video tape which is slightly more expensive.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

A little ways back I wrote up (with the help of others on the forum) a rundown of pretty much every shmup on the system, so check that out if you want a general overview of what's available.

Thanks for linking that. I picked up all the shooters for the Saturn platform as they were released back in the day and really enjoyed the read.BulletMagnet wrote:A little ways back I wrote up (with the help of others on the forum) a rundown of pretty much every shmup on the system, so check that out if you want a general overview of what's available.

If you love the games enough to re-purchase them, then I would say yes!
I own all 3 Parodius games for the Saturn, and I love em all.
As for great games here are my list.
Layer Section/Galactic Attack (super cheap and excellent shmup)
Thunderforce Gold Pack 2
Thunderforce V
Hyper Duel
will update list later

Cool list Bullet Magnet. I never knew about Gekirindan. Sounds cool. I dig Taito (even the stuff that no one else likes).

particularly get Thunder Force V, because Thunder Force V and Thunder Force V Perfect System (the PSX port) have various differences that actually warrant a purchase of both
the same sort of goes for Soukyugurentai (PSX port is titled Sokyugurentai Oubusyutsugeki)
get R-Type Delta, it's good

Both GP's are still available in some places:

A little pricey, but you can buy with confidence.

Great write up BM.
I miss my copy of Batsugun. Shouldn't have gotten rid of it.
Will reacquire at some point.
Battle Garegga and Souky are my top two picks for the system though. RS is epic if you have the money for it. A handful more are definitely worth owning, but not before those above (opinion).
