Classic games you don't like.
Beat 'em ups are basically only fun when playing with people who don't really know how to play games, or when you don't feel like playing a game seriously.
I'm incapable of learning whatever skill it takes to perform better than someone playing the game for the first time. And beat 'em ups that force me to learn how to play well (Seperation Anxiety), can blow me.
With that in mind, I think it's a great genre.

didn't like Ninja Gaiden, but i will like Black. the easy mode calls to me.
anyway, i have to like beatemups, because not only are they a great stress reliever, but as i mentioned before, my only arcade 1cc is with TMNT. also, Battletoads kicked some major ass in the arcades, and the countless (not really) others i need to find and love.

I have no sig whatsoever.

The secrets in SWM were not there to artificially extend the game's lifespan - the stars in Mario 64, sure, because you HAD to have a certain amount to go certain places. The goal of SWM was the same as Mario 3 - to finish the game by clearing levels. The secrets were there to find, IF you wanted to.
You also HAVE to clear a certain amount of levels to beat SMW.
The stars in SM64 are levels, with 6 in each world. The only difference is that there is more freedom to chose the order you want to beat them in.The difference between Mario 64/World is that you DON'T have to collect a ceratin number of ITEMS to finish SWM or SM3, you do so in Mario 64. The changes between each star aren't that radical, you're still essentialy re-visiting the same world seven or eight times if you want a perfect tally. SMW you maybe had had to do some levels twice if you wanted every level opened up. SMW made you do the bare minimum to complete it (you could do it in ten or so levels!), but Mario 64 used the stars as devices to artificially lengthen the game, because it was impossible to provide the same volume and diversity of levels in 3D as in 2D.
They are stages like in the other Mario games, you just happen to get a star at the end of each. I don't see how that affects gameplay. They could also have said on the locked doors that you have to beat 25 stages to enter and it would have been the same.
I don't know why you say the changes between each star are not very big. Take the first world for example, first you beat the bomb guy, then race the turtle, stomp the pole etc. nothing alike.
Obviously they could not make 70+ huge worlds, so the way they made it makes sense. I don't see what that has to with artificially lengthening the game?
You could argue that the coin collecting missions were made to artificially lengthen the game, but they are not necesary to beat it.

I just found Ninja Gaiden to be cheap, not difficult. The shitty controls and camera didn't help.
I got quite far before I realised I wasn't actually enjoying it.

I don't care that much for most beat 'em ups either. There was this really cool one that let you choose if you wanted to play the game as a beat 'em up or as a turn-based RPG fighting style game (weird, but fucking fun as hell), but I can never remember that game's name. It was on the SNES.
But yeah, aside from Guardian Heroes and Alien vs. Predator (AC), not too big on beat 'em ups myself.

If this were a beat-em-up forum - or bemup forum if you will - there would be flaming for classing walk-alongs with one-on-ones , just like when people do here when someone classes a shmup with an on-rails shooter.

I've never liked Mappy. I find the fact that your character can't jump extremly annoying, and I don't think the "trampolines" in the game help much.
Galaxian is one I don't like either-it's just "too in between" Space Invaders and Galaga, and as a result, IMO, it comes off as awkward and not much fun.

I've never played either of these, but I vaguely recall hearing about them, one of 'em might be the one you refer to...one was (I think) called "Tuff E Nuff," and the other was "Ultimate Fighter." Again, I'm going off of very vague memories here, but I think those might've had some kinda RPG-ish element in 'em...jp wrote:There was this really cool one that let you choose if you wanted to play the game as a beat 'em up or as a turn-based RPG fighting style game (weird, but fucking fun as hell), but I can never remember that game's name. Hey
Culture Brain developed a series of games that came to the US as uh..
Super Ninja Boy
The game featured a combination of turn-based battles(usually for bosses), and actual beatemup action. However in the US only two of the games came out(one on the NES and on the SNES).
I believe in Japan the series is Super Chinese World or something like that. More games were released. Pretty neat little series. There was also Flying Dragon(again by Culture Brain) which combined action platforming, semi-beatemup style fighting, and RPG battles.
Culture Brain also developed the really interesting Baseball Simulator 2000 for the SNES and a Flying Dragon game for the N64(Which was actually two fighting games in one...one Super-Deformed and another "Realistic"..not extremely good but eh I thought it made for a good rental.

Umm. You forgot the two Gameboy Ninja Boy games that came to the US. There were also other various Flying Dragon/Flying Warriors games for the NES and GB that made it to the US.PepsimanVsJoe wrote:Culture Brain developed a series of games that came to the US as uh..

Like a good friend who comforts you after a heartbreak, Klonoa was there when I decided to abandon Sega because they were sucking bad at marketing the Saturn and couldn't therefore experience Nights. He came to me, placed a hand on my shoulder, and handed me his Pac-Man hanky to wipe my tears with. Besides, it had a melodramatic ending.sethsez wrote:NEW ADDITION:
The Klonoa games.
Okay, okay, they're not classics, but they're certainly a beloved underdog, and they're nothing but mediocre yet pretty platformers. There are numerous better games in this genre on the Genesis and SNES, so the amount of love this series gets is rather odd.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

Thanks BrianC but I don't care.
OH!
Chrono Trigger sucks
All Metroid games except Super Metroid suck.
Hell most of the Turbografx 2D shooter library is a bore.
Actraiser 2 and Illusion of Gaia are just awful
As far as the Sonic series goes I hate Sonic 3. Lousy short game. At least with the Sonic & Knuckles add-on it actually felt complete.

I agree. It's also SLOW.Marc wrote:Ridge Racer. Seriously, I fucking hate it. Think the cars felt stupid, the powersliding was gay, and the ONE track sucked. Daytona owned it, and Sega fucked up with the Saturn version. Those two conversions running side by side probably helped quite a bit to kill the Saturn over here.

Broken? What?
Memorizing how long to run before reverse jumping over the shell from the respawing bazooka man, when to swing your sword to kill the bird, and when to shift direction to land on the platform using the changing wind isn't my idea of fun.
Perhaps if the enemies didn't respawn I'd enjoy the game more.
But I find it irksome and tedious.
Sort of like a fast-paced Ninja R-type.
Memorization made barely acceptable by respawning enemies.
The Xbox version is grand. . .aside from the camera control.

Xbox Ninja Gaiden - The controls are bad. The camera is bad. The fact that you need to use the same move over and over to beat certain bosses is lame.
And no, it's not hard it's cheap. I got through the first few levels with Master Ninja ratings on all, but quit when I realised I could enjoy myself more by bashing my head in with a mallet.

How They Light...
All of the Final Fantasy games, Xevious, original Pac-Man, Pong, and most Atari games. Many more to come...
On the money with that critique. It's an insult to gaming.judesalmon wrote:Xbox Ninja Gaiden - The controls are bad. The camera is bad. The fact that you need to use the same move over and over to beat certain bosses is lame.

CastleVania SOTN
Now that I've played it for awhile my feelings still have not changed, basically It just feels like a cut and paste exercise, the enemies just look as though they've just been played instead of actually using inthe scenery ala Super Metroid.
Theres no emotion or ambiance inthe levels the level design is questionable.
I really wish I could enjoy this title but I found it extreamly boring and repetitive.
IMO CastleVania should have stayed "just a platformer"
Now I need a to buy a copy of CastleVania Chronicles too make me foget about SOTN

But SOTN is so huge that it indeed has some somewhat boringer sections, but overall a superb game. In the saturn version you can select from three characters from the get go even.
I'd buy the SOTN for Saturn over chronicles, but chronicles really is a blast. Especially as it came out of nowhere. I never knew about the X68000 verison and few did.

Final Fantasy - Boring storylines with an equally boring battle system each game. If there was more to the game like there is in say... Star Ocean, then i'd love it. Menu Selecting gets boring basically.
All Beat-em-up's - Streets of Rage, Final Fight, anything. I will admit though, I like some of the old Turtles ones. At least they had some inspiration in them with things poping out the floor and smacking you in the face.
Tekken - In my opinion, unbalanced and totally combo friendly. Being attacked by predictable combo's really really gets tiring after a while. I played it to death basically. Watching paint dry would be more interesting and action packed.
Mario Kart - Personal grudge, the game is alright and its a great concept. The AI though is a force to be reckoned with. In all Mario Kart games, the AI somehow manages to find ways to fly up the field, stick with you and hassle you, only to pip you on the line. Playing with friends is great though.
Gran Turismo - Whoever said it earlier about the Graphics being blown on this, I agree with you whole-heartedly. Simply the most annoying series of challaneges ever. "OH, I feel like acquiring a S license today, and then maybe do a 90 lap race where the computer with absolutely never catch me with my super 'escudo' rocket car"
Slight defence for Sonic here, only because it applies to one of the Sonic games

Maybe you've played it, I don't know, but Sonic Advance 2 fits the Precision Platforming bit quite nicely. (in my own opinion) Pick it up and try and get some fast times. Other than that, yeah, I agree somewhat.BulletMagnet wrote:Toss me on this pile.
