Driift Mania

Post by louisg »

Has anyone else checked this out yet? It's a Sprint-style racing game. So far it seems pretty good, though I wish there had been difficulty settings for the AI players. I really like how it controls, with the counter-steering happening automatically as you let off the steering, and the other physics are pretty neat too.

I've seen it before, but I haven't had the chance to try it out yet.

I probably will try to though, as it is the type of game I usually enjoy.

And you can say that it's bad based off of the looks alone?

Really, it's a bit bothering how people pass over a LOT of games anymore based on looks alone. Anything that doesn't get a million dollar marketing budget gets labeled as crap by the overly-vocal gaming population.

Is it a bad game? Who knows, but if you just assume you won't like based off what it looks like or the PR machine tells you, you'll never figure out what you like for yourself. A fairly reasonable comparison could be made of most Shmups and the general gaming press.

I learned a long time ago that games only give back what you put into them.

Give it a shot.

On the other hand, the plethora of games available today may make some people overly vocal, something which will allow them to keep their game "menu" manageable. It's not that they hate it, but that they can't afford to try to like it.

Well, knowing the genre, this is pure crap.
NeoDrift Out on the other hand is a more sophisticated game. now they want to go back to 1981 and have it all on one screen? It is a very boring and frustrating type of game. I cannot see any of you guys enjoying it for more than 10 minutes. You are right, it is a prejudistic view I have of this game, but seeing it is enough. It's on one screen! They released a Dreamcast game which had scrolling, which no doubt is much better than this. Maybe for people who have motion sickness from scrolling or non-gamers this might be a simple fun passing time for 15 minutes. Go and play these games on mame and see for yourself. It is nothing new. Some old school genres are still cool today, well not this one screen top view racing genre. IMHO offcourse. whatever. Please let me know if it IS awesome.

Is this a place where people's opinions can' be shared? Or should I really be visiting some other off topic message board? It's not as if I'm flaming him or trying to inflate my post count. We were discussing the thread topic. What I said is truthfully my opinion after several years now of games writing. It really is just a giant marketing machine, and probably more so than most other entertainment industries.

I thought I was fairly polite in my response. Truthfully, I'm quite a polite person, but can't two people disagree on something and talk about it, in, you know, the off topic forum? There surely isn't anything about it in the rules as long as we're civil, and I'm certainly not trying to troll anyone here, nor do I imagine D is.

At any rate, I don't plan writing anymore in this thread. The last thing I need is people judging me for my on-topic, non-flaming discussion with another member of the boards.

louisg's disappointment could be due to D's posts and/or Jockel's GameFAQs epithet. No need to take it personally, neist.

Yep =) Sorry, I should've quoted.

For people who don't like single-screen racers.. try Badlands.

Well I still find Super Off-Road (in any incarnation other than its obviously cheating coin-op parent) much more enjoyable than the majority of overhead scrolling racers, simply because I can see the corners well in advance rather than reacting to a bunch of flashing arrows. I'd say writing off single-screen racers because scrollers exist is no different than writing off Space Invaders '95 or Galaga '88 because we have vertically scrolling shooters!

I agree.. though, I'd like to see people do more with a Hot-Rod style game. That one had neat gameplay rules. It wasn't a breakneck-fast scrolling racer, but it had interesting obstacles. There was also a shop between rounds like Sprint. You could play 4 players at a time, and when a player fell off the screen, gas was deducted. When the player runs out of gas, it's game over. Pretty cool idea! Nitro on Amiga was pretty close. Too bad about Motoroader (I tried to like it, I swear!) =)

I enjoyed the Amiga version of Hot Rod back in the day, there was another Nitro-type game on the Amiga by Team 17 that was pretty decent, though the name escapes me now.
