Despite having been deluged by the SCEI/SCEA marketing machine with the hype concerning the PSP version of Gran Turismo, how is it and is it worthy of the GT moniker this time around?
I recall that SCEI touting a GT-themed PSP back in 2005 but it was never officially released. Then when the 1st time that SCEA announced that a PSP GT game was scheduled for a North American release, I gladly paid my $5 pre-paid deposit for one. Sure enough, got an e-mail saying that the PSP GT game was cancelled. WTF?! (This was before the days of the PS3 and all the hype surrounding the Gran Tursimo HD & Gran Turismo 5 Prologue releases.) It is now October 2009 and PD has finally delivered the goods. It's about fucking time they did so.
And so the patient waiting begins anew for the upcoming GT-5 with a slated May 2010 release is expected. Developer PD is notorious for not releasing their GT games on time. You might recall the infamous North American release of GT-4...SCEI & PD delayed it again and again until it was finally out on day one.

All I know is, it lacks a career mode and I don't like the graphics.
It's a bit hard to play this when GT3 looks better, and with GT5 being incredibly realistic. I think "real driving simulator" and "handheld" don't mix very well.

It's been said that dev PD had created an all-new gaming engine running at 60fps from the ground up. This is certainly better than the 30fps build of the original PSX GT game. There was a unlockable option to play a single track in high-spec 640 x 480 version running at 60fps but that was more of a "bonus" tech demo from dev PD with regards to the original GT game.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to pass on this one... There are things that the PSP does well, but the system seems like it would be a pretty terrible thing to try to play a racing game on.
Re: How is Polyphony Digital's GT on the PSP?
I picked it up and honestly it was probably a bad move. I rarely ever play my PSP so it had to update my system from firmware 4 to 5.5 I think it was. Once that was done, my first 2 attempts to play were thwarted by being irritated by the load times. I swear it loads for 10 seconds just to get to a new menu screen. You make a selection and off it goes to load the next screen.
Ugh...
I'll have to see how to get the UMD ripped or something.

Or you could try installing it if you haven't already. I just got it and it plays very well just as a GT should. Yeah, there's no career mode, there are no upgrades, and you can't save the tuning for every car. But actually, that works great for me since I didn't care for that anyway. 830 is a lot of cars and there are 30+ tracks...
Re: How is Polyphony Digital's GT on the PSP?
Glad someone else spotted that. Plus, I believe the racing 'field' consists of four cars, including your own. Now I know that the racing part of GT has never exactly been the main event, but still, four cars?Elixir wrote:All I know is, it lacks a career mode and I don't like the graphics.

I had a chance to play my brother's copy over the weekend.
I think some people's expectations may be a bit too high. I went into it expecting 'Gran Turismo Lite' and that is exactly what I got. There isn't a traditional career mode, but what is left is a nice compromise between arcade/career modes. I'll spare you the details, as you can get them at any major gaming site.
To keep things short, this is the best handheld racing sim available. If you like racing sims, this is a great fix when you are away from home. If you only play your PSP in your living room, save your money.
