Bullet Candy Perfect

Post by charlie »

Hi all,

I'm charlie, and i'm a lurker  In fact i've been lurking round this forum for a few years, since finding it while searching for myself on google shortly after i released the original Bullet Candy in 2006.

I'm also responsible for Space Phallus :?

Anyway, I've released a new game and i though maybe a few of you might like it. It's a kind of remix of the original Bullet Candy, with a slew of gameplay refinements and a new 3D graphics engine.

The game is all about trying to achieve the perfect, death free run. There is also a kind of tactical suicide thing going on, allowing you to kill yourself and keep your weapons and score multipliers instead of being killed by an enemy and loosing them all.

The game also keeps track of average scores, time spent playing and grades you on your performance with ranking and a progress graph. There are also 20 achievements and online scoreboards.

Video link:

There's a 20 level demo for Windows and Mac OS X at the link below, and if you like what you see then the full version costs a small $1+ donation.

I'd love to hear what you all think, so let me know if you like the game (or hate it, I suppose) :D Smiley Pics below.

Cheers
Charlie

When's a new version of space phallus coming out? I've been waiting until a new one came out to do a score run. :D

I'll give this a try, though.

I'll be putting my stupid hat back on and doing some more phallus in the not too distant future. It needs 2 more levels adding, along with a proper menu. I also need to look at making level 1 a bit more interesting, and possibly a bit less difficult. There was some weird scoring stuff going on with it too if i recall correctly...

Hope you enjoy this one in the mean time :)

Not a big fan of arena mouse-control but I did kill a decent amount of time on it, none the less. :D

PS space phallus is great.

Although I found it a bit too creepy for my likings (well duh), space phallus had a fantastic OST, kudos for that man!
I'll try your game asap

I spent days trawling the web for those tracks, i think i picked some good ones too :) I have permission from the musicians involved to release the soundtrack, but i need to find two more tracks (and finish the game...)

Hope you like the new one :)

So it's basically just E4 (deliberate suiciding and bullets) mixed with Geometry Wars?

I haven't played this game yet, but from what I gather from the video, no, it's more like just the Geometry Wars part.

Don't focus on if you hit a button and your little avatar explodes or whatever, focus on mechanics.

E2 and E3 are shmups with a enemy-based activated chaining system. Much more like Homura or Night Raid than Garegga or Ibara or even Hitogata Happa. E4 is an endless mode rhythm game. Bullets are irrelevant. Suiciding is also irrelevant. In the whole series there is really no suiciding as a mechanic; it might as well be a special attack button. In fact it's your only attack button.

Geometry Wars has bombs. They act just like lives except when you use one instead of getting hit (i.e. as a panic bomb), you keep your powerups and multiplier and the rest of your bombs. The amount of "lives" you have is really lives + bombs. So the suicide mechanic in Bullet Candy is more or less just like a bomb. You use it like a panic bomb when you're about to get hit, and you keep your powerups and multiplier. As in Geometry Wars, you earn more of these lives/bombs by scoring points.

Structurally the game is quite different, it has similar controls and is viewed from the same perspective, but it's a lot closer to Robotron than geometry wars. Give it a try, you might like it...

Oh hi Charlie. I'm Kasreyn and just bought/played your game.

+1 sold because of the article on destructoid. I like it. It's not that overwhelming just fun? #8 leaderboard on my second attempt. there are some good scores above to beat though!

Charlie is right about the suicide mechanic. Only problem is using it :)

Please do hook up a pair of analog sticks to your PC. Makes this game a lot more fun.

New Bullet Candy? I'll have to grab that for sure.

While the first one wasn't perfect, it was good enough for a first attempt at making this kind of game. I really liked asteroid mode as well :D. I think I got it through Steam.

As long as it has an offline hiscore board I'll be happy. That was my biggest issue with the original Bullet Candy: my score just disappeared into thin air once the game ended.

I do prefer using dual stick for Bullet Candy, however I think mouse aim has better potential in the higher levels. You need very precise aim to hit some of the nastier bullet-spammers from a safe distance (way on the other side of the screen), which is not easy to do with an analog-stick.

It has offline scores, which dtore your best, average, highest level etc. and also there is a not at all like Wii sports style graph for you to monitor your progress with :)
