Got it the other day for free from GameStop (mint condition, score), and hot damn this game's a lot better than I thought it would have been. When it first came out, I wasn't too familiar with Irem's games and looking at the screenshots made it look to me like some kind of Koei strat-game..but wow, how different it really is! The graphics have held up great and overall it's just fun..the X-Sonar aspect is really cool (it's looking at the skeletons of the graphics, which imo is pretty darn neat) and aside from blowing stuff up, the exploration factor is there too (looking for lost relics to power up and get more money).
I think Thunder Force is the guy here who praised this game many months ago, and now I'll definitely give this game big props.
How funny, that I find this game more enjoyable than the last entry in their R-Type series..
Speaking of irem, how's Disaster Report?

Yes, this is one awesome sleeper hit! Too bad it was a PS2-exclusive!
If you have an XBOX, check out Blood Wake-it's speed boats instead of subs, but other then that, it's pretty much the same type of deal.

Kiken was praising it back in 03 or something and got me turned on to it. Loved the hell out of the game... some really awesome mission designs and generally awesome gameplay. Didn't really feel like a Racjin game at all.
Whenever I see a thread on SomethingAwful asking for recomendations of great lesser known PS2 titles, I always throw it out there. Pretty easy to fish up a copy in the bargin bin these days.
