I have now undertaken something that is probably truly ridiculous. I'm trying to listen to Sun Ra's entire output more or less in sequence. The more or less is important because Sun Ra has around 130 official releases, and many, many more that are unofficial. This is worsened by the fact that I do not actually have all of those releases, but my collection is pretty solid up through the late 70's, at which point it comes to a screeching halt. This is in part because I think Ra's best output is up through the early 70's, and I just don't bother picking up titles past that point in general.

I need to start a blog for this or something (I'm trying to review them all on Amazon too), but anyway...

Image

Angels and Demons at Play: A partly confused album because the first half comes from 1960 while the second half is among his earliest work, recorded directly after Sun Song (1956). The first side is a sort of big bang for Sun Ra; way out ahead of is prior work, featuring strange polyrythmic arrangments and creative orchestrations. The years are important here because up until this point, Miles might be seen as one of the most progressive people in jazz; pushing his new modal thing (Milestones, Kinda Blue) but with 'Angels & Demons' Sun Ra is way out ahead of everyone. The sound of the title track could even be a source of inspiration for the lush Impulse sound that seems to come out of nowhere with a Love Supreme, culminating in side-long washes by Pharoah Sanders (IE Karma).

Anyway, Evidence paired this up with the amazing Nubians of Plutonia to fill out the disc. It's a great purchase of early Ra that still has plenty of bite, but isn't the full-on madness of his later releases.

So, I started a blog for trying to listen to every Sun Ra album in sequence. For those just crazy enough to want to give this a read:

This new Flaming Lips is BADASS. Almost squarewave bass and tons and tons of noise. That's my shit. There's a sample or something on the second track that sounds like cell phone interference? Cracked up when I scanned the track back and realized it, since it was in perfect rhythm to the song...

^^^Good to hear. I found their last album to be little weak and was hoping for a comeback of sorts with the forthcoming double LP.

I've been getting back into a lot of obscure and weirdo new wave/minimalist synth and 80's shit again:

Batang Frisco- Batang Frisco
Minny Pops- Drastic Measures Drastic Movement
Mekanik Kommando- It Would Be Quiet in the Woods...
Matthias Schuster- Atemlos
Haruomi Hosono (along with other members of Yellow Magic Orchestra)- Cochin Moon

Just a few things off the top of my head.

The new Alice In Chains, 'Black Gives Way To Blue'. The most surprising comeback in a long time for an almost-middle aged grunge fan like myself. Absolutely brilliant, Will DuVal had some big shoes to fill, but by god he's done a good job.

I'm reluctant to judge until I hear the entire album, but my initial reaction is:

It sounds like stoner metal for kids with ADD.

To clarify, I think everyone came to the table with a bunch of good ideas. It's pretty rad to hear them try to assemble all of their trademark styles into something cohesive.

I'm digging it. The second track in particular (Pyramid of the Moon) gets my head nodding EVERY time.

It bears repeating: Abbey Road and Revolver remasters + good headphones = :D

I still think Rubber Soul is my favorite though.

I haven't picked them up as I want the mono set and have no money whatsoever. I can't wait to hear them!

I have considered picking up The Beatles (White Album) as a seperate as it is my favourite and my current copy is clearly lacking in the fidelity stakes compared to the vinyl I know and love.

I picked up the white album (IMO their best and one of the best 'mainstream' rock albums of all time), magical mystery tour (a nostalgic favorite) and Let It Be, which is sort of a distant third for me. I'm not in love with a lot of the beatles, though they deserve mad props. People who write them off because they aren't underground or something are being fools. It's damn fine music and will still be when we're all in the ground.
