Eight Forces, how something that looks this good can play this bad is beyound me.

Engine tests and prototypes shouldn't count. If they do, osst.exe is definitely worst shmup ever (maybe after Protoship and Udderdude's "Shitshmup" ).

What's wrong with osst? It does what it's supposed to, has a buttload (lol) of configuration options, very functional graphics, and even has a legendary soundtrack.

Maybe if games came with a rating of the median entertainment time, or maybe a trade-by date, good games wouldn't get mentioned in these threads

Gyrodine...I've been hearing of that one for years but never bothered playing it, I don't think.

Awful gameplay, awful graphics, awful music, awful control... Awful everything! I'm quite convinced that it was actually ported from GBA to PSone as well.

Oh god, that game...but it still looks better than Divine Sealing or, dare I say it, Major Stryker, most of the time. Pretty ugly yeah. On the PlayStation port, there is box art, but I don't believe it was actually released. The worst things about the game are the extremely bland and featureless levels (I think even CT Special Forces on GBA has better shooter levels - and that's primarily a Metal Slug-alike!) and the complete lack of thought put into the game systems (scoring system, weapons system)...

Final Star Force isn't as bad as Eight Forces. This ones at least tolerable if you expect Bad level design and enemy patterns from the start and bomb accordingly. The one time I tried to actual dodge something more intricate in stage 5(a spread bullet pattern) the game said fuck you and spammed a super fast cheap popcorn in my face along with some Meteoroids that take multiple shots.

I know people like to hate on popular games to be trendy but theirs really no place for that in this thread. Anything that has a remote following in this forum cannot be that bad.

Look at the bright side concerning Strike Force Hydra:

It doesn't keep score and is so easy you'll 1cc it on the first try. Thus, you don't have to play it more than once.

The PS1 port was indeed released. It was featured in Bulletmagnets PS1 shmups article as well. The best part is the ability to jump across the screen infintly. I believe that the developers added that feature when they realized that bullet dodging was impossible due to the acceleration needed for the hovercraft to move around. Damocles is absolutly right about the game being easy as hell, I think the default setting let's you start with nine extends?

I really can't agree with Eight Forces - the scoring system is completely stupid and broken (lol unbroken chain of environmental triggered bonuses for points), but the action is fast (and I dare say fun), you have to dodge tons of bullets headed straight for you, and it doesn't control horribly or anything. The bombs work pretty much like in a Toaplan shooter for example. It needs autofire even more so than the Toaplan shooters, but that's true of Final Star Force too. The only problem is that most everything can soak up waaay too many bullets, even the two bosses you can meet in the first stage (LOL) where you can keep fighting a good minute after it starts flashing (probably longer if you don't bomb at all), and the boss patterns seem to suck.

Yeah I looked up Quasar today as you said. Its pretty bad, those long death noises don't help the game either. Nor do the flashing screen.

You sort of sidestepped the point entirely. Surely in your experience playing since 1981 you have come across shooters worse than Trizeal that aren't Divine Sealing or D-Force. If you haven't, you've been very fortunate.

From the top of my head I'll say that B-Wings (I guess Boogie Wings more than makes up for it though!) is terrible, as is Strike Force Hydra, most of the shooter segments of Sigma Star Saga (there are some cool parts to be sure), and the Gerrymation-enhanced game Thunderbirds...wait, let's look up Gerrymation...oh look, I'm repeating myself again.

Stratovox really does belong on my hate list; crap game that I lost a lot of money on and bought from somebody who at least appreciated it (I'm sure they appreciated the money more though). Rargh! Even if it weren't for my stupidity it would still have earned its place due to its reliance on the gee-whiz factor above all else - namely, gameplay. Super Invaders with a failed attempt at doing what King & Balloon gets right.

I'm sure that a certain game by Apogee Software isn't likely to be as good as Trizeal, even without having played the T.

Those are the worst shmups I've played. The arcade version of Battle Cross is as bad as them MSX one.

Really, play Battle Cross.... it's hard to top that.

But from my own point of view it is indeed one of the worst or lets say "boring" games i´ve ever played. I was really enthusiastic when i first played Trizeal, and i really tried to enjoy it. But my motivation went away with every new try.

So i´ll be fair and exchange Trizeal with Skullfang as 3rd place.

Trizeal's quite good sometimes. Especially if you got into the scoring & medalling systems.
Yet sometimes it can be boring.
