Space Megaforce, Gradius III and Phalanx are the only ones I would recommend on the system, I think. I guess UN Squadron is alright too.

Super EDF is good stuff, too.
SWIV/Firepower 2000 is pretty well regarded as well, although it's definitely a love/hate game for me.

If you can get imports, be sure to check out Macross. Japanese Sonic Wings is also recommended, mainly because the US version is ridiculously priced.
If you're into the Galaga-type of shooters you might like Cosmo Gang The Video as well. It's a pretty neat and enjoyable game.

+1 to 'Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie' and 'Super Aleste/Space Megaforce'
Other than that there's not much enjoyable, super fami isn't exactly "shmupping-gear".

Axelay is awesome. Cybernator is a cool run n' gun style shooter too. I think Raiden was released on snes, but there are better ways to play that one.

Yes, if we're not strictly talking autoscrolling-shmups, Cybernator is ace. You could add metal warriors to the list too but that one strays a bit too much from the traditional shmup away.

Not meaning to stray off topic; but I have to second Cybernator and Metal Warriors, those two just ooze quality...look no further for 16-bit mech goodness. Having that big fat Konami logo on the carts certainly helps, too.

Pop 'n Twinbee is also good stuff, if you dig cute 'em ups. It didn't get a US release, but EU and Japan got it.

again i have to say u.n. squadron. the game is better on the snes than it is on the arcade, and that doesn't happen very much.

I can't believe only one person has recommended R-Type III. That's the best one on there. There isn't a lot on the SNES, but it's a classic.

IMHO Metal Warriors and Contra 3 are the best games mentioned in this thread by a mile.
Edit: Wild Guns is great too, forgot about that one.
Double Edit: Also forgot Pocky and Rocky.

R-Type III, Pop n Twinbee, Contra III, Parodius, UN Squadron.
R-Type III is by far the best imo, and UN Squadron has charming music.

I like Pop'n Twinbee & Wild Guns (though not a shooter), and Cybernator/Valken is also excellent. Add in Contra Spirits and those are my 4 most-played games on the system.

I swore I was probably just affirming someone else's post, and I was horribly shocked when I was the only one at the time.evil_ash_xero wrote:I can't believe only one person has recommended R-Type III. That's the best one on there. There isn't a lot on the SNES, but it's a classic.

'Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie is one of my favorite horizontal shooters. Give it a go if you haven't already.

I love arcade Raiden and I used to have this cart. This is by far the worst version of Raiden ever. Don't even bother unless it's free. Even then it's a waste of your time. Too easy and slow.

I had to hold myself when I saw Raiden Trad mentioned.
And I agree with doctorx0079, it is an atrocious port.
When I saw the way they made those guided missiles in the SNES I almost puked, honestly.

Parodius Da!
Gokujyou Parodius
Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius
These 3 alone are nice to have on the SFC (and yes there's a way to play them on an SNES with a Game Genie, google it), though the last 2 have plenty of slowdown due to all the action in the game.

Yeah, Raiden Trad was the first game in the series I played and even back then I thought it was flat-out awful. Thank god I played ][ in the arcade not much later... talk about a step up!

or without. I just had those tabs removed from the SNES cart slot. I don't have the SFC Parodius games, but Goemon 4, Pop 'n Twinbee, Super Puyo Puyo Tsuu, and Super Aleste work great on my US SNES.Bloodreign wrote:Parodius Da!

Re: Recomendations for purchase SUPER NES Shooters---
i actually prefer the snes over genesis when it comes to shooters, my favorites are:
super aleste
gradius 3
r-type 3
pop'n twinbee
parodius da
gokujyou parodius
i didn't care for the port of sonic wings, i felt it didn't scale down well at all to snes low, non-tate resolution.

R-Type III is indeed excellent but you can go ahead and skip Super R-Type.

Run 'n gun-wise, both of the Pocky and Rocky games on SNES are good and should be able to be found pretty cheap in North America.
You could try Hyperzone. Its a rail shooter more like Space Harrier, but still pretty fun.
Blazeon doesn't look absolutely awful; I think I played it about 15 or so years ago; anyone else play it lately?
At the very least, you could fire up your emulator of choice and test out all these SNES shmups before you buy them.
