In the USA, at the Staples stores, they sell the 3M branded rotating monitor stands for $50. Up to a 24" widescreen LCD monitor can be hooked up to it without any problems. I've got one of those myself and it works like a charm. ^_~

Dynex 20" CRT, and a Sanwa modded Hori EX2 case with a PS1 PCB installed. Comfortable, plays great, no complaints.

View from just outside the room:

And another corner shot with my MAME cab a bit more visible:

Still working on trying to restore the thing.

I once had a supergun setup on the nightstand by my bed. Unfortunately it wasn't TATE, but it was for a 4 slot MVS. My wife finally got tired of it and gave the boot. The fact it was a huge-ass Trinitron CRT probably didn't help.

Recently, I've attached this to my tvset: a home-made digital mercury sensor acting as a switch with a pendrive, which works as a variable for an Autohotkey script that tells MaLa (MAME frontend) whether the monitor is in vertical or horizontal position. When the black box is horizontal, the mercury switch inside leaves the circuit opened, so the pendrive is not detected and the frontend goes to horizontal orientation. When I rotate my tvset, the mercury falls and closes the circuit, the pendrive is on, and the layout turns to vertical orientation. So, I will never have to manually rotate my frontend again.

Now that's proper hardcore! I'd love to get a set-up in my bathroom. I have to make do with a crossword or some old war comics when I park the breakfast.

Here's my ghetto tate rig:

If those studio monitors look they're on the verge of falling off the drawer to you, then you are absolutely correct! I had a pair of stands for them but couldn't find the top plates that the monitors rest on anywhere, so this will have to do for now.

how are those speakers? I've been thinking of getting a pair of the 5" ones online that come with the stands and cable, for pc usage... games, music listening and audio related stuff

The KRK Rokit 5s are a great bang for the buck. These are the generation 1 ones so I'm not sure how it compares to the generation 2 version, but probably one of the best deals you can get for $300/pair. They're not the best, but in my opinion they sound better than some of the monitors I've heard in the $1000 range. If there's anything wrong with them, I'd say the midrange can sound a little "cluttered" at times when there's a lot going on but that is being nitpicky on an audiophile level. I think it would be hard for you to find something that sounds as good as the KRKs do at the same price range.

Noah says prepare for the flood...

I've been meaning to post these for months, then i moved and my setup changed. My setup original was a 19inch viewsonic and then I upgraded to a 21inch Sony. I also upgraded sticks and this system is ready to play anything I want to throw at it. For the PS2 I use a megacool 1080p adapter so it runs via VGA. I can have either the laptop or x360 run via the vga passtrough. The laptop is pretty lowend but capable of running mame, SSF, nullDC and pretty much any non PS2 emulator.
Image

Originally my setup was in the corner of the living room.
Image

In my new apartment I keep the shmup stuff in my computer room on the opposite wall of my "productive" equipment. This is my current configuration anytime I won't be playing the PS2.
Image

Of course I still play PS2 here and there, and I can't exactly play Deathsmiles tated so I have that covered as well. The xbox on the tated screen is US and can't play DS but when needed I can just swap video cables and use the LCD if I choose. The video cables stay connected to the displays when not in use and keeps things easy. Also I can swap the power brick from one xbox to the other when both are not needed simultaneously. Usually the JP xbox stays in the living room since it plays most of the non-shmup games I have, but on occasion it serves its original purpose playing shmups.
Image

Just for those who like to see what the scanlines look like on low res games. The reco image is using fake scanlines via the options menu.
ImageImageImage

I'ts tough to have quality pictures to show off the image quality but i tried. I can say it looks sweet IRL.

Man do I have memories of those soundblaster/audigy cards. I went through at least 5 of em years ago.

i've been experimenting with a new setup because I wanted more size. The crt was purchased so that my low res games would look ok but was a compromise on size. Most 360 games don't really need low res, the exclusion being the RFA package. While the CRT is adequate I thought that newer games could take advantage of more screen space. Here is what I have been experimenting with. Not 100% sure if this is final. the megacool1080p does not work with this TV unfortunately so Mushi and ibara PS2 don't look as awesome as they could. Galuda, Dragonblaze and DDP DOJ look really good though :) Of course 360 games look AMAZING. I'm happy camper.

The 21inch CRT is on the left, the 32inch lcd(~25inch 4x3 diagonal)

But you're stretching a 4:3 image to 16:9. Kinda defeats the purpose...

LOL, thanks for that I guess, we are playing Raiden 3 on it so you know we're not too serious. =)

Playing Raiden on that monitor horizontally was even more terrible (very small) so when I saw it had a vertical option, I jumped in it.

Anyways, I'll probably have to take it apart (which really means, put the monitor base back on) if the boss ever visits... we did it pretty quick and dirty, so no huge loss.

Just thought you guys would be amused to see what bored game store workers can do for kicks, in a place full of the same old same old of 360 and PS3 games a good old vertical shooter is still the most fun.

First time I've seen Tate in a store, nice. So how do the people who walk into the store feel about it? Get any weird looks from customers for having a TV on its side?
