I just played my first credit of this ever. I'm really, really, REALLY sorry I didn't get to play the first 2 weeks now. Then again, before now, I was worried that STGT wouldn't feel like STGT this year because we'd only play good games. I guess I'm glad to see I was mistaken? I can't tell if there's an inviso-flicker effect on the bullets or if the laptop just doesn't like the game/this MAME version/something else. I think I'll keep playing just because of the entertainment value of the mongoloid announcer, if nothing else.

Yep, got to the third boss without any bombs left. Stupidly got killed by the second part of its first attack pattern on the third pass, just sat there like an idiot (had never encountered this boss before so I'm sure it would've gotten harder...I'll be pissed if it doesn't). Had been picking up some 10K bomb bonuses earlier too. 804,870 after the second boss, pretty nice.

So far the highest score I've gotten from the first stage is 311,750 (at least that I recorded with a snapshot - coulda swore I hit 312K one time). That's with pulling in four black planes after the flamethrower delta stealth plane (which I can do pretty consistently now); oddly, often I do better when I miss a medal or two through the stage, probably due to triggering more patterns faster; figuring out when to move to the medals is half the game for me in the first stage.
