Buying a JP 360 for shmupping!

Post by malc »

Hi peeps

Sorry if this has been done before, but as you may know I'm the most irregular visitor in here. Daft innit. Not even 100 posts yet. Jings.

Anyway, I have been buying meself a few jap shmups in anticipation for getting a jap 360, which I haven't a clue about. I do know I'm going to need one, but that's about the extent of it.

I was going to plump for one from PlayAsia, but is that the best bet? Not sure if I'll need a stepdown, I do have a spare UK PSU here though too for my UK machine. Pretty excited though, just too many good shmups coming out on the system that aren't making their way over here. First time I've had to specifically buy another system to play them on though, that does hurt a bit. It's also going to be hard trying to explain to the gf why I need TWO lumps of xbox under the telly too.

Cheers for any advice in advance.... malc

the newer 360's have different power bricks. if you get the same model as your old one you can use your UK brick, but newer 360 are more reliable.

there is a great sticky on all of this in the hardware section.

not sure about PAL titles, but most North American titles will play on a Japanese 360 (maybe you can sell your old one like I did)

Partially wrong. The newer power bricks are smaller, but you can use any older euro brick with any newer system (doesn't work other way around). I'm using a first-gen power brick I got from Germany with my Jasper JP 360.

In all likelihood, you won't need to keep your PAL 360 as just like most US titles, most PAL titles are region free and will work fine on a JPN 360. All my PAL games worked fine except Ridge Racer 6. Check here for compatibility: http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/showthread.php?t=54517

I'd love to have a comprehensive, well-maintained list of regionfree games. That particular list hasn't been updated for over a year so one needs to go through the 37 page thread in hopes of finding the info needed. There's this list which also hasn't been updated in a while and of course Play-Asia's list but they usually don't cover PAL games.

Thanks for responses guys - nice thread in the hardware section, how did I miss that. I must be blind to stickies.

That will be good if my PAL stuff work on it, as my biggest problem really is managing to get two 360s under the tv. Got a whole bunch of games coming already for it woohoo! Here's hoping customs don't see it, but they always do. Buggers. Oh and here's hoping it doesnt RROD as well (already happened to me twice on UK machines)

Yay for new shmups. Haven't bought anything for ages and loads in one go.

bye! - malc

Malc, a wise move indeed, your not going to be disappointed! Getting a J360 has rekindled this hobby for me in a big way. The only downside is how getting both Raiden games is going to cost way more for me than if i had a USA console, not sure if either game is getting a EU release though. So what did you get other than Deathsmiles?

Hi Chem!

yeah, I am sooo looking forward to getting into some jap shmupping love again. I've been in the wilderness too long, and need to schedule in some serious game time. Last time I dedicated some money and time into it was when I got a whole bunch of jap ps2 games after kitting out my ps2 for imports, which was about 3 years ago. Got a whole dose of Cave stuff back then, Mushihimesama, Ibara, ESPGaluda, and had months of fun with it.

After that though, what with a divorce and FOUR house moves, everything has taken a back seat. Been downloading a lot of stuff on the usual suspects, but completely lost touch with the shmup scene, not even sure all that I have missed - I keep a list of stuff I want and even that went out the window. Scares me sometimes that theres brilliant games I missed and will never know about.

So this is like a bit of a revival, those ps2 import days revisited, and dead excited to be J360ing soon.

What else did I get? Actually, only Death Smiles! Have my eye on a couple of ebay efforts and want to get Otomedius and Raiden 4 from Play asia with the console probably. Enjoying getting the time to sit and post here too, most people think I'm dead or something :)

bye!!! - malc

Awesome, I've had a similar experience but with my shmup addiction fading after the Dreamcast days. Only now am I catching up on the PS2. Deathsmiles is my first and only 360 purchase - just this one game was more than worth it though

Now that we are on the subject of the JP Xbox 360. I'd like to ask if there are any good available demos or games specificly for that region I should check out?

I'm having a hard time browsing due to the language barrier. All I saw when I updated was Otomedius G picture and that was it lol.

So any recommendations on free downloads or full games that have not been released in North America please list them.

Thank you
Jimmy

If you don't have the full game already, there should be a demo of Raiden Fighters Aces (I heard the demo was removed from the marketplaces of other regions). There's also a demo for Time Leap, though I get the impression you won't be able to enjoy it. If you can't wait for the English version, you can download the Japanese demo for Magnacarta 2. There's a free iDOLM@STER theme available, and some free Puyo Puyo Fever gamer pictures. Finally, there are a hand-full of Japanese-exclusives in the Indie Games section, though I hear most aren't very good.

I think all those Japanese Indie games can be bought from the EU/US Indie Game stores too. I've certainly seen a few of them on the EU store.

I have Raiden Fighters already NA version. So what your saying is that there pretty much isn't anything worth downloading lol.
Thanks.

Plan on getting black label soon for death smiles
