PlaySEGA presents Sonic: 'Little Big Planet' style

Post by Thunder Force »

Fans of the Little Big Planet 'Play, Create, Share' philosophy, who are also fans of 2D Sonic old skool platforming, may be interested in the latest open beta of PlaySEGA's "Sonic The Hedgehog Editor".

Free for anyone to play any user-generated levels - a paid subscription is required to be a Sonic Level Creator.

It's all browser-based, so performance is not great, but it loads within seconds and this beta is still quite remarkable if you're into this kind of thing.

Here's a sample level anyone can try which I put together (includes quick/easy path, and more complex alternate routes + secrets!)

Interesting! Not bad at all, though it is pretty funny that when you complete the level, it says "Sonic Passed."

Indeed he has. Somewhere around the end of the Dreamcast era... ;)

Hey, this is pretty cool. Someone could potentially piece together a good sonic game at long last.

A few comments about the level I posted earlier: (for those few that care - don't worry I don't blame you if you're burned out on Sonic games :) )

This is a large stage - as large as Sega's Sonic Editor allows - designed in the original Sonic 1 style; also structured similar to old skool Turrican level design (I still remember awe at first seeing world maps of Turrican 1 in 80s gaming mags).

There is a straight quick run-through path available for speed fans, that is very short and easy, but the real fun on this level is two separate paths of platform exploration high up into Sega's clear blue skies. There is also a huge secret area somewhere with hundreds of rings, look for a visual clue to find it if you can.

p.s. If the graphics come up all scrambled when the level first loads, you just need to quit and reload it again, it's an occasional bug in the Flash web code PlaySEGA is using. Have fun and post your own levels here if you make any!
