I'm almost afraid to ask after dozens of terrible reviews, but is anyone else in that small miniority that I am in--that is to say, are you absolutely adoring the simple, shallow pleasure of running about, dodging bullets and slashing cowboys to shreds with your samurai sword?
In pure game mechanics, the game really has so little. Not real special moves of anykind (just keep hitting square), no exploration or real use of the terrain, no special moves to buy, etc. etc. etc.
All of that said, I'm absolutely in love. I don't know how long it will hold my attention, but here's one vote against the sea of 'no'.

Eugenics: you know it's right!
Yeah, Samurai Western is simple, dumb fun that gets tiring after awhile, which is why I like to play in short spurts. The first boss battle with Jean infuriated me, though. I got tired of constantly jamming on the circle button to dodge, then jamming on the square button to attack. I finally managed to get him trapped behind a covered wagon and just wailed on him from the other side with the powerful "X + square" attack.
Again, the game is simple and dumb, but it's fun.

I enjoyed Way of the Samurai (once again, unlike everyone else), but this really isn't anything like it at all.
Overall I'd say the game engine is more fun thatn WOTS, but since every other aspect of the game has been removed other than fighting, it better at least flow well. In a way I'd compare this to something like the first GunGrave game in that you pretty much just run around and kill people til everyone is dead. That isn't to say it plays anything like Gungrave, but it is just as pointless. The problem is I love the stupid premise and I love the feel of dodging bullets and slashing the crap out of cowboys. For anyone else who doesn't feel a particular attraction to that premise, it probably isn't for you.
