Z-ONE / Wonder Land

Post by mumu »

Two new DSi shmups for only 200 points each are being released in Japan this week. One horizontal and one vertical.

Both are developed by Suzak, who previously made two F-Zero GBA games.

I hope these turn out well, but I'm a bit skeptical. Suzak's track record isn't the best. F-Zero GP Legend had odd crashing physics and was lacking in difficulty compared to other F-Zero games. F-Zero Climax improved the difficulty and physics, but was still a bit unpolished in some areas. It practically required you to change the control settings to beat some challenges and the way the tracks were made and designed around the level editor gives turning an odd feel. I don't get why the developers stuck to flat courses. I understand that the GBA isn't the PSX or N64, but even Sonic Drift 2 on the Game Gear got more creative with stuff like half pipes on the courses.

It feels like R-Type all over again since the two pods in front of your ship can protect you from all enemy fire. (Or better yet, just imagine Gradius w/ your two shields...that can actually fire multi-direction.)
All the stages so far have this pattern where it's a set of 3 stages (normal stage , high-speed stage Gradius style, and a stage w/ a boss on it). The stages look the same considering the game uses the same tilemap over and over again but structured differently on each stage.

The game feels really cheap just because you don't have any power-ups and your shield can protect you from anything.
Currently playing this at the moment though it's way too easy. :/

^^Wha? Is the whole game built out of those 1x2 tiles seen in the screens?
Talk about low production costs...

Thanks for the heads up.

Oh hey. Two front pods that can cancel bullets AND a small hitbox. Nice.
Also, 1x2 tiles in different colours. Wooooooooo.

I gotta say so far, the hardest part of the game is the high-speed segment. those tight turns get pretty cheap.
EDIT: OH MY GAWWWWWWWD THIS GAME IS SO BORING. RANK DOESN'T EVEN PICK UP UNTIL STAGE 30. And even then it only gets a LITTLE more interesting because every stage now has a boss.
I'm done with this game.

Sad thing is that Wonderland is a better game than Z-ONE. At least it's pretty good. For a Touhou-wannabe.
