Games Writers Needed (unpaid)
Games Writers Needed (unpaid)
Games writers needed for a startup gaming magazine. You don't need any previous experience but you must have an excellent grasp of the english language and also be passionate about videogames.
Knowledge of retro computers and games would be a distinct advantage, as is the ability to maintain a professional approach to your work, being reliable and keeping to deadlines.
Initially, we are looking for games reviewers and news contributors, although there is scope to write features for the right candidates. The best reviews and the best news features will be published in the magazine.
Please apply by submitting a 400 word review to a game released between now and 18 September 2009. The deadline is 21 September 2009 for submission and I am particularly interested in reviews of the following games:
Beatles Rock - Wii, PS3, XB360
Mini Ninjas - PC, XB360, PS3, Wii, DS
Guitar Hero 5 - PS2, PS3, XB360, Wii
Wet - PS3, XB360
Katamary Forever - PS3
Cross Edge - PS3
Blood Bowl - XB360, PC, PSP, DS
We are also looking for an insightful 1200 word retro article on Radiant Silvergun (Saturn) for inclusion in the magazine (with a similar editorial vibe to Edge magazine's Time Extend/The Making Of sections).
When applying, please answer the following questions:
1. Why do you want to write for the magazine and what do you hope to achieve by pursuing this endeavour.
2. What are your top 10 favourite games of all time and why?
3. Who are your top 3 developers and why?
4. What games magazines do you read today and what do you like about them.
5. What kind of content would you like to see in a games magazine, and what would your ideal magazine be in terms of editorial content and design?
Please note: all reviews and articles are UNPAID.
You do get your work credited and published, so this is an excellent way to gain exposure.
DEADLINE FOR INCLUSION IN THE MAGAZINE IS 21 SEPTEMBER 2009, WITH THE BEST ARTICLES BEING PUBLISHED.
Please send your applications to intelp120@hotmail.com

I can't wait to play Katamary Forever or Mini Ninjas. Or Wet, which I thought was something you got from an adult store.

I've got Mini Ninja's sitting here, I haven't opened it yet. Is it meant to be good then?Ed Oscuro wrote:I can't wait to play Katamary Forever or Mini Ninjas. Or Wet, which I thought was something you got from an adult store.

It's a funny little game but the "next-gen fluidity" ruins the battle system; everytime you hit the attack button, the fancy sword swinging animation will be played first, resulting in a 1 second delay til the enemy is hit. -_-Skykid wrote:I've got Mini Ninja's sitting here, I haven't opened it yet. Or imagine it like this: if you button mash for 5 seconds, your ninja will attack 3 times. lol
I was about to buy it because the rest of the game is great fun but got pissed at the aforementioned issue.

Is the magazine also unpaid?

Give the guy a break, he's trying to do something off of his own back for the hardcore scene. I respect that.Dragoforce wrote:Oh, that's a shockerreplayme wrote:retro article on Radiant Silvergun (Saturn) for inclusion in the magazine
Regardless of how common a theme RSG has become, it's still an all time great.

Indeed, Hardcore Gamer Magazine tried this same route (yanking folk off the internet for free) and failed miserably. Good luck on that venture, though.

The reason why you haven't heard of Hardcore Gamer magazine, Skykid, is because it's a USA-based indy video game magazine venture. ^_~Skykid wrote:Who? As a non-accomplished writer I would like a little more info on the start up venture? how much capital is invested , do you have a press/print house lined up? whats the name? how many people are involved?
These are all question i have and would think anyone willing to spend the time writing would ask.
Re: Games Writers Needed (unpaid)
Ah I see! Very interesting - do you know which states it circulated and how long it lasted. I'm curious about this indeed.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:The reason why you haven't heard of Hardcore Gamer magazine, Skykid, is because it's a USA-based indy video game magazine venture. ^_~Skykid wrote:Who? Re: Games Writers Needed (unpaid)
this reeks like Craiglist vultures looking for free work from artists.
If I'm reading correctly then a free contribution of work does not necessarily guarantee you will even get published in the magazine? Oh well... good luck and welcome to the forum.

Re: Games Writers Needed (unpaid)
HGM was started in 2005 and ceased publication earlier this year. It was started by one of GameFan magazine's (also dead) original founders after him and a bunch of other ex-GF staff were trading stories on a forum of the shenanigans that took place at GF. Dude literally asked anyone who posted on that forum to try contributing to that magazine, for free. A lot tried, and amazingly enough the magazine was actually published and it wasn't that hard to find (I figure if you can find it in my neck of the woods, it's got to be easily available). It was an okay magazine at best; decent if completely unmemorable writing, okay layouts, blah. The unabridged version of this would take me way to long to write, but if you dig around for it you'd probably be amused.

For a while, HG101 was one of the sites hosting the pdf versions of HGM. In return, HGM would advertise the sites that hosted the pdf's on a page in the back of the magazine.Ed Oscuro wrote:Hardcore Gamer, Hardcore Gaming 101, is there a pattern here?
