When Hood met Windshield

After I just got on the freeway from Dave's house after the shmupmeet, the hood flew back and smacked the windshield. Lucky I was still in the slowlane, and was able to go to the side easily, since the hood covered the whole windshield and I couldn't see anything. I had my camera for the meet, so here's a pic.

Dodged bullets the whole day, and I get hit by my own car hood.

Plus gotta tow it back to SF from San Jose.

Holy crap! Glad to hear you're alright. 101 is no place to have that happen. Hell, I was going almost 85 all the way home. I guess your shmup instincts led you to safety... you know, having the path of the road memorized so that when trouble struck you just reacted.

Did you honk your horn to try and use a bomb?

Seriously though, sorry to hear about this. Hope it doesn't cost too much to get out of.

Umm, any idea why it happened? I imagine a prong or hinge came loose or something, but wow, that's just scary...

Dang! That sucks! That musta been scary. Happened to me once but I was only doing 35 and my truck had already been wrecked (which is why it happened). Good luck getting your car back in action man.

My friend and I were listening to the Giants game(they got whooped) when it happened. Right after getting on the freeway and as the car started to pick up speed, all of sudden the damn thing flew back. I believe my exact words were "OH SHIT!"

The latch is messed up. Can't say if it was damaged from before or after. Expensive bad luck.

Point-blanked by the hood.

Damn, that's crazy bad luck that the hood not only pops open but manages to swing back far enough to crack your windshield. Glad it sounds like you and your friend didn't get hurt, but man that sucks.

I'd probably freak out if my car did something like that. But then again, all sorts of stuff goes wrong with my old POS Volvo, like the brakes becoming so shitty that braking becomes a little scary (one of the tires seems to sound like its skidding. I dare not to fix it because A: Every time I fix one thing on this blasted hunk of junk, something else breaks and B: I'm getting rid of it soon.)

I forgot to mention the force was so strong it knocked off the inside rear view mirror(notice it's gone in the picture) and also the cover of the ceiling light. Plus it knocked off my Rumbling Angel anime figure I had on the dashboard, and broke the part where it connects to the stand. Gonna cost >1,000 to fix the damages.

Over $1000 in damages? I would consider your car totaled. I think you would be better off in getting another car.

Of course, this is coming from a guy who owns an old Volvo from the 80s that is constantly having stuff break down. My dad is offering me his 96 Ford Explorer, but I don't know if I want something as flakey as a Ford SUV. Still, he's kept it in great shape and he bought it new, so hmmmm?

OT somewhat-an aqquintance I know who is a drummer form the band I was going gonna hitch a ride with (to take photographs) cashed his car as he was on his way to pick me up...

He was shook up but nothing serious apart from the car ofcourse.

$1000 is a small price to pay considering you walked away from this accident without a scratch and didn't damamge anything (or anyone) external to your car. Could have been a lot worse if you think about it. Anyway isn't this what insurance is for?

I actually got this car for 800 bucks from my dad's co-worker.

The passenger side door was damaged in a collison, so he bought a new car and sold this to us. We spend around 400 bucks to fix the door plus a semi-paint job. We had the repair shop that's next to my dad's work to do the repairs. Looks like they will repair it this time too.

And sadly, my insurance is only one way. Also I had to pay the tow since my AAA road service is only basic, which covers only five miles.

From now on before getting into my car, I will check to make sure the hood and trunk is locked down, the tires are not flat, and make sure no one is hiding in the backseat.
