Writing is Hard

Post by FatalError »

I am currently working on a feature for my website (The Twenty Hardest Shooters Ever Made), and I have gotten almost everything done. I have the screenshots, I have the pages ready, I've uploaded the graphics, and I've double and triple checked my code.

I just haven't actually WRITTEN the feature yet.

Now, I figure that since I'm doing a feature on shooters, it should be easy to put fingers to keyboard and just write away, but for some reason, I am just stuck. The entire task of writing has suddenly become incredibly difficult.

I don't know if it's writer's block or what, but I'm having issues with writing.

Anyone else feel that writing in general can sometimes be a daunting task, even if it's on a subject that is of great interest to you?

Sometimes it's the things I'm the most familiar with that are in particular the hardest to write about. Like I can write about Cybernator easily despite not spending THAT much time with it but then when it comes to doing something for, say, Goldeneye it's like "omg". Then again, I'm crazy. :D

The best advice is to just start writing. It doesn't have to be in order, or grammatically correct or correct spelling or anything because you can always go back and edit it later. Just start writing, getting your ideas out, maybe focus on a particular game you've been thinking about, a gameplay mechanism or whatever you have to elaborate on and start putting it down. The rest will work itself out.
Feedback will set you free.

Acid King is correct. I tried to write a short novella, and following the advice given by Sean Connery in "Finding Forrester" I just typed away, not worrying about editors or anything. First chapter came out as a bit film noir-ish since it's the main character narrating the events, but was pretty good for my first draft.

So just sit down and type away. Don't restrict yourself and remember that if you try to please everyone, you'll end up pleasing nobody. Write it the way you would like to read it if you were a visitor on the website.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

The "start writing" strategy works for me. Though, I have to be forced to start writing. I wrote a 8 minutes informative speech for my speech class two days before giving the speech. I worked 'bout half day the first day and the second day almost from day to day. Ugh. The speech was pretty decent too, but I didn't get to practice much, and I stuttered a couple of times during my delivery. Just start writing! If the block persist, sit there like an idiot until something comes :o.

Another time, I wrote a story with a friend of mine using IM. I would write a couple of lines, let him write a couple, then me again. I was really amazed how good that "spur of the moment" story turned out. My friend even wrote a two pages long story inpired from that.
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"
"They should at least make 100K to have a good life"

Yeah, when I use to write manga reviews for an Australian magazine I sometimes couldn't think of what to write/how to begin.

I find it hard too. I was going to write a review a week in my wbsite but it's now turning out to be a review a month. :(
