JP games work no problem on a US DSi--a friend brought his over and I tossed in Ketsui DS, works like a charm. That certainly is a nice D-pad.

Did I completely miss the part where Nintendo decided to start region-locking DSi games after years of handhelds being synonymous with "you can play all games from anywhere", or did I just get that mixed up with discussion of the DSiWare titles (which are region-locked like, well, every download service for every console)?

Yeah, it was announced a little ways back that DSi stuff would be region-locked, though "regular" DS stuff should still work anyplace.

As I understood it, only the DSiWARE stuffs are region locked.

Excluding DSiware, DSi is totally region free.

The dsi ware games themselves are not region locked from what i understand, you just can't get them in the EU/US shop.

Not available in the shops might as well mean they're 'region-locked', for all intents and purposes.

If the new restriction isn't a good reason to tell Nintendo to screw off with their shiny new console they had to debut before the more flexible old one even had one foot in the grave, I don't know what is.

I think once you get the jap. dsi-ware files on a eu/us dsi, it should work.
However that won't be the case so soon.

I had the feeling this was the case. It won't be too long until someone dumps the game somewhere, with an appropriate revision of those flash cart things to make em work I bet.

It most likely wouldn't work with a flascart, since nds games run in a sandbox-mode, where the DSi hardware features are disabled.
Once the common key of the DSi gets found, we would be a good step closer.

Actually, no. I just tried Ouendan on my American DSi and it plays fine.

As for this game, yep...it's be quite some time to come over here at the rate DSiWare games are being released.

He was referring to DSi carts and downloads. DS carts are region-free and can be played on any DSi regardless of region.

Or you know... borrow mine. I wouldn't say a 500yen downloadable game would justify importing a Japanese DSi for (...or maybe.)

Z-ONE really sucks. Wonder Land is a little more decent for a Touhou clone. Overall, they're not worth getting, even if it's 200pts. You'll get tired of them much much faster.

Well, it seems none are worth getting then.
How do you recommend I spend my remaining 500 free points ?

Dark Spirits is coming out soon and it looks like a promising game, save your money for that. After that, I dunno why you'd want to do w/ your other 300 pts.

Nice advice, I just took a look at Dark Spirit and it sounds indeed more promising.

Ok, I spent on it also, bt cant get the scoring system for now. Anyone can explain it ? In particular, I dont understand how the color of the box released is decided. Also, where are the points ? In the boxes or in the ennemies ?

It's all in the boxes. Basically, you want to keep a constant stream of items. Even if you have ONE box on-screen, it can continue the chain as long as another box appears before the one box before reaches you. The moment your chain breaks is the moment there are no boxes on-screen anymore.

The more boxes that appear on-screen, the higher the "LV" of the boxes will increase, with the max LV. being the flourescent green boxes. Basically, you want to cancel as many bullets as possible w/ the bomb (Type-A:EASY) or try to slow-down as many bullets as possible before canceling (Type-B:MANIAC).

Thanks for the explanation SFKhoa.

I could no miss easy mode with a score around 85 millions.

Now I try and play maniac mode. I keep dying when I am in "laser mode" (purple bullet-slowing aura on) and I dont understand why. Are those purple-ed slowed bullets still active or what ? If no, how comes I can die when in laser mode apart from running into ennemies (which I am quite sure I dont) ?

Also, I could trigger the max box LV in maniac mode once, i think high level boxes are easier to trigger in this mode than in easy.

Yeah, the MAX LV. cubes are easier to trigger in Maniac. That's how I feel about it.
Also, regarding Maniac. Even if the bullets are slowed down, they can still kill you, so you pretty much have to cancel them out before that happens.

This is somehow weird. I tried hard to die on some slowed bullet but could not. I placed my ship right in the middle of a huge pack of those and I dont die, then I release the laser button : kaboom ! instant death. Some other time, I try and cross another pack of slowed bullets, dont release the laser button : kaboom also !

Is it possible some bullets are still active when slowed, and some are not ?

Ok, sorry for double post, but I was wrong. All slowed bullets are still active indeed.

Now I've played quite a bit of maniac mode and like i a lot ! I did not figure until now that when you shoot an ennemy with the laser, you cancel both the on-screen bullets that had been fired by him, plus the slowed down bullets ! Just put yourself in the middle of a big chunk of bullets, turn the laser on and hope to kill something ! I just managed to pull out a 2800 chain of highest level boxes.

In this sense, later phases are almost easier than earlier phases since you have better chances to destroy something, simply because there are a lot of things on screen ! Phases 3 and 4 own me much more often than phases 7 and 8.
Bosses are way more difficult than in easy mode though. I lost 5 lives to them...

Strangely enough, it's actually impossible to kill all the flying turrets on the Phase 8 boss.
The cool thing about Maniac is that if there were no more boxes on screen and you kept holding down the laser, you won't break your chain unless your laser meter runs out.
What's your best score on it so far?

Wow, I did not know that, that will help improve my current best score of 73 millions, game not cleared.
I cant access internet now with my console, how high are those top scores on the leaderboard ? How high is yours ?
