I voted yes,

games like COD4 and Halo 3 are good fun, sure they are not the most cutting edge of games but a game doesn't need to be to be hugely enjoyable. I can spend hours playing FPS's with my friends, I find it a truly social type of game in its multi player incarnation.

I do most of my gaming on a Xbox360 which although not the best platform in my opinion for the FPS it is good enough for enjoyable play. It also helps that allot of my friends have 360's too.

Yes. It's one of few genres that actually get better. Unlike third person shooters, which just get clumsier, gimmickier, and more over-the-top, FPS still have some integrity, and new gameplay mechanics (usually) make gameplay more interesting instead of just looking flashy.

Except FarCry 2, that game did everything wrong.

I voted no, but I do believe that old dogs (IE me) can learn new tricks. I'm really enjoying Metroid Prime Trilogy at the moment, and it sort of an FPS anyway. Still have moments of frustration with it though. I have to give the genre credit for the whole 'immersiveness' thing, but also way up on my list of games that are headache inducing.

I like the stuff without regenerating shields, L4D especially. I wish there were more quality single player games. Guess I should try Metroid Prime again.

Think that's more of a yes than a no.

There's only the occasional current-generation FPS that I like. I too hate regenerating health and all the other crap that shitty console shooters have made into standard features for all games. It's tough being a PC gamer and seeing the downfall of the FPS genre brought on by consoles. Off the top of my head, the FPSes I enjoyed this generation were anything by Valve (they cannot fail at making incredible games), Crysis and its expansion, Bioshock, Quake Live (I guess that counts?), Metroid Prime 3, and Call of Duty 4's single player. Far Cry 2 was also decent. Fallout 3 was good, but more an RPG than anything else. And yes, it is an RPG first, because if you play it like an FPS (without using VATS) it's a clunky mess. The proper way it is designed to be played is by using VATS to sort of emulate the turn-based gameplay of the older titles.

What I really can't stand about this generation of FPSes is that they're all developed primarily for consoles now. The PC just gets shitty ports with mouse acceleration, poor optimization, and few customization options. Consoles are no place for FPSes. Also, every game nowadays seems to be using Unreal Engine 3, one of the shittiest looking and playing engines in recent memory. Source looks better to me than UE3, and it's friggin 5 years old!

Yes for me, CoD4 and L4D are probably some of the games I've played the most ever.

worstplayer: About third person shooters, I like RE5 though its modern: I found the story mode disappointing but mercenaries is a lot of fun, especially in coop. The controls are pretty fun to use once you get used to them and the combat has a much different feel than FPSes. Then again I haven't played 3rd person shooters that much.

Crysis and STALKER are good, Halo 3 and CoD4 are... not good.

I've only really enjoyed the Halo series for modern FPSes. Otherwise, I just go back to Marathon and Doom.
I've heard gobs of amazing praise for Valve stuff [which I've never played], but...

Now I know who to blame for the current state of the games industry.

I didn't vote. The last FPS I bought was probably Turok 2 because I liked the control system on the N64 turok games which I beat both of them. When Goldeneye came out it reversed everything and screwed with my head so much I couldn't ever get anywhere on it.

I think I bought a PS2 game from the creators of Burnout using renderware and I hated it. It was mundane boring crap. I'm of the opinion that if I am going to try and reach a place beyond the next blockade I want to see something different and exciting on the other side. The last thing I want to see is another stupid blockade with the same types of enemies with the same type of environment.

I don't play online games or co-op games. I'm old school. Present me with a puzzle and I'll try to beat it in my own time. I have no intention of playing anything in 3D like this.

Now give me the upcoming Alien Breed thats coming out on PSN and your talking. That brings back Gauntlet style gameplay. I could easily enjoy that in multiplayer online. In fact I can't wait.

FPS is for people who like repetitive gameplay. You might say thats hypocracy on a site like this, but let me tell you, FPS's have no challenge from the game structure, only from the competition. Thats my problem with it overall.

Thanks for reading.

All the F.E.A.R. titles have been pretty good (even the non-canon F.E.A.R. Files episodes). F.E.A.R. 2 Project Origin may be a little easier than the first, but it's no less entertaining IMO. F.E.A.R. 2 definitely runs smoother than the first one, with a more consistent frame rate. Too bad Monolith didn't do the port of the first one on their own. The games in the CoD series haven't been bad either.

The Time Crisis 4 extra content with Captain Rush in an FPS scenario is not too bad, once you get used to working with the GunCon3's layout. I think these FPS stages drew more flak than they deserved.

Doom 3 is sort of OK-ish. Not too many enemies attack at one time- and they disintegrate right after being killed.

Haze on PS3 was decent the first time around. Its somewhat interesting story offers a couple major twists. I'm not sure I care to go through it again, since it's rather mediocre as a game. Graphically it can't touch F.E.A.R. 2 or the later Call of Duty games. I'm glad I only paid $15 for a used copy rather than the original $60 price.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Amen. Too bad things will never be like they were. Even when there is a decent pc fps, it seems that its success as a pc game only gives the devs more reason to turn it into a console series. I remember dreaming about the possibilities for twitch fps gameplay in the future. Now twitch style fps is limited to random open source projects and mods on the quake 1 engine. Though not as twitchy as others, just looking at the difference between team fortress classic and team fortress 2 pretty much sums up where the genre has gone for me. Keep it simple, accessible to noobs, and easy to play with a console controller.

I guess we had our time in the 90's and early 00's and it's time that other take the spotlight with their new directions. But it still feels like someone tore down your favourite little restaurant and put in a mcdonalds drive thru knowhamsayin?

Bah, just played Kingpin: Life of Crime, stale shit like that is why we NEEDED Halo to help shake things up. Halo wasn't the greatest game in the genre, but it did popularize some new ideas, and it also wasn't yet another by-the-numbers adventure game with guns and collectables.

Amen. Too bad things will never be like they were.[/quote]

So you're thinking of FarCry instead of Painkiller and Serious Sam. Which games are the definition of "twitch" gameplay? ;)

I don't really play FPS, but I did buy & and play through Crysis and Crysis Warhead. Had fun. I think the previous FPS I really played was the first Half-Life, so there was a lot of new, cool stuff for me to see, though I'm sure many of the features had been used before.

I regret that FPS games are difficult for me to play. I get a feeling of floatiness and disorientation when I play them
I loose sense of direction and get lost easily…

With that, I have played Metroid Prime 3 and I kind of like it but I spend much time trying to figure out where I am at and where to go. I have even resorted to using a strategy guide and it has helped some…

I have also played the Halo games, and I kind of enjoy them but I am a very poor player. I have played 8 player with friends and always place last (or second to last when my wife plays  ) so that takes away some of the enjoyment away as I am basically a wandering target for everyone. I have had much fun playing co-op with my friend (who is a casual gamer) though. It has been kind of like a feeling of like when we used to play Contra. That is fun and its good to have help to go in the right direction with a friend along the way…

Maybe you should try Wolfenstein 2009. It has "compass" that always shows shortest path to current mission objective so getting lost is pretty much impossible. Of course by blindly following it you'll miss some upgrades, but MP43 you'll get in first level is only weapon you'll need anyway  .

I don't like them because I grew up playing games in which all the information was present. Things off screen couldn't really kill you. My main problem with playing current 3D FPS games is that essential information is not present. I have no problem kicking the living hell out of my opponents in fighting games, which come down to pure reflexes but I hate spending hours of time being killed from behind. If a game can present all essential information at once than I'm usually darn good.I'm horrible at console FPS games and my friends mostly play those, however if we play anything where you can see everything once and reflex is involved I dominate them completely. Simply put, they fall apart on 2D games, I fall apart on 3D games. I guess it is the result of years playing different things, their brain has specialized in spotting targets while spinning, mine is better at anticipating moves in 2D.

Let me put it this way, I don't want to play Call of Duty anymore, they don't want to play ANY fighting or shmups. I really don't enjoy playing a 20 minute FPS level only to get 6 kills in. I really hate any non co-op multilayer challenge that lasts more than about 5 minutes. They don't enjoy a 5 to 0 King of Fighters secession. It was kind of funny when one of my friends got Street Fighter IV. He thought he was good untill I dominated everyone in the room on my first test of the game. They later mentioned that Street Fighter II Special Championship Edition was way too fast. The thing is that I don't even like Street Fighter that much.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

I finally started playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein (...the original, I played the demo back in the day). It seems teh funz, more or less.

RTCW 2 / 2009 seems interesting, I'll put that one on my new computer eventually...not sure this one would handle it. The intro cutscene is pretty ridiculous though: Who knew the Tirpitz had deck-mounted scout plane launches, V2 rocket silos, AND depleted uranium doors?

If you haven't already, try running TF2 in DirectX 8...takes the shine away from it, but it'll run much smoother on slightly okay systems, even some with crappy on-board graphics cards.

Anyways, I'm a sucker for almost anything GoldSrc or Source. I've played through all the Half-Life games numerous times, logged in hundreds of hours in both TFC and TF2 (Fortress Forever would be nice if it didn't take forever to load, and oh yeah...have more than 4 people playing it), etc. Used to be real big on the original Unreal Tournament, but I never cared for the ones after that because they felt gimmicky and tad bit overblown in the testosterone department...plus the original UT weapons were the best in my opinion.

Just recently for kicks, I busted out the N64 and was playing Quake 2 and South Park...I still don't understand how anyone could say that a controller is better for FPS, but I was able to readjust and have some fun. Might be time to Turok soon, as I always wanted to fully play through that one but never had the time.

FPS are great fun, it's a nice change from other types of games. I do enjoy Call of Duty 4, Halo 3 and even the first Halo Combat Evolved.

Yeah, I had a hell of a lot of expiddience tweaking CS:S to get it to run well. I tried every trick I knew on TF2 and more, but I can still only get about an hour out of it with a house fan blowing on my FX 5200.

See, the only other FPS that turns me on is Timesplitters 2, but that game's older than old.
