best, Guwange for sure. with Progear following second... these are the ones which really deliver a 'world of their own'... ESP series is fine too, but i loved RaDe's in particular, didn't really like the fantasy setting of Galuda

I really like Dodonpachi Daioujou. The music is awesome, it is goddamn hard and I like the stages.
The scoring system is very rough. But I like it that way.

For least, Dangun Feveron. I didn't like it.
Also I'm already hating Deathsmiles II, even if I haven't played it.

I can understand anti-loli sentiments, but if you were able to just not really notice them, the rest of the game looks like some kind of missing Ghosts N' Goblins game.

It reminds me of a lot of Chariot from Three Wonders.

Designwise, Dangun stands above all. Progear comes really close though, it's beautiful.
ESPRa.De is both well designed and terribly designed in my eyes for some reason though.

PS: am I the ONLY one that likes Dangun? After I typed my post, I looked at what others said, and everyone disagrees with me...

EDIT: Oh damn, I forgot to mention I hate Guwnage's design. It's the only reason I don't have it.

Nah, I enjoy Dangun's aesthetics too. It reminds me of the first stage of Gekirindan, with the neon outer space backgrounds and the groovy music. I think it's a throwback the old shooters where outer space is always filled with bright purple and funky tunes, you know like Rayforce, R-Type Leo, etc... and I dig it.

I like it too, I just love the pixel art and the funky music. It's really unique, people should not let them be spoiled by the Japanese superplay where the guy stays always on top of the screen and destroys everything before sight. If played "normal" it's a lot of fun. But I'm a sucker for fast as hell game play though...

Best:
DoDonpachi, best Cave pixel art ever!
Espgaluda II, best Cave CGI art.

Least:
Death Smiles II, as I saw the first pics I needed to laugh, I thought it was some joke of Doujin developers, but it wasn't...
The future is 2D

I think the high-point for me so far is Dodonpachi and Dodonpachi DOJ, though I have a soft spot for Ibara. I really like the sprite art and music. Unfortunately I haven't played Ketsui yet, but I like the industrial look vs. the girls and such.

When it comes to design, Guwange is definitely my favorite... lot of variety and everything just gels together nicely. Least is probably Dangun Feveron... fun game, but pretty generic. Music rocks, though!

Maybe Dangun is supposed to look kind of like a generic space shooter? I know it was sort of done as a tribute to Truxton or something. I like the game, but the music and gameplay is what really make it stand out.

Hey, who's that in your avatar?

In terms of sprites, popcorn, backgrounds, boss sprites - Progear hands down.

Bullets patterns though? That's harder to decide. I've got to admit my bullet pattern loyalties fall with other developers. My limited experience of Ketsui's bullet patterns makes me think they're the ones for me.

Progear has a nice aesthetic but it looks sort of "washed out" to me.

If you play this in MAME, it's easily fixed by adjusting the GAMMA levels. The CPS palette is generally a bit bleak in all games on the system(s).

If we are talking purely in terms of art design, not gameplay design, then it's hard to rate anything above Guwange. Although I also really like the Nausicaa inspired setting of Mushihimesama.
