In a couple of days I'll be getting a japanese Xbox360. Hopefully its the jasper with HDMI. :crossing my fingers:
Assuming it has HDMI, I'd like to use my LCD monitor that has DVI-D but it doesn't have built-in speakers. I aware that if I use a HDMI -> DVI-D cable I'll get video but no sound. I don't want to use the VGA cable since my computer is connected to my monitor that way. So what am I suppose to do here? Would a VGA -> DVI-D adapter work well?

Re: Xbox360 + LCD monitor with DVI-D
VGA to DVI-D doesn't work, DVI-D is digital only.
You have to grab on of those 360 HDMI Audio adapters. This way you can use HDMI + analogue audio (or digital SPDIF) at the same time.

Or you could just hack the AV cable that the 360 comes with.Fudoh wrote:You have to grab on of those 360 HDMI Audio adapters. This way you can use HDMI + analogue audio (or digital SPDIF) at the same time.

Thanks for answering my questions guys. I think I'll hit ebay and get myself a cheap HDMI audio adapter and DVi-D cables.
One more question. Are all HDMI to DVI-D cables the same?

Re: Xbox360 + LCD monitor with DVI-D
There are two types : DVI-D Dual Link and DVI-D Single Link. I'd recommend getting one that is Dual Link.rolins wrote:One more question. Are all HDMI to DVI-D cables the same?

If you already have an HDMI cable, you could just get an HDMI to DVI-D adapter instead.

Or you could get a cheapo 3rd party VGA cable like those in play-asia for sound
Re: Xbox360 + LCD monitor with DVI-D
technically a HDMI cable is a single link DVI-D 18+1 cableThere are two types : DVI-D Dual Link and DVI-D Single Link. I'd recommend getting one that is Dual Link.
Re: Xbox360 + LCD monitor with DVI-D
That's true for HDMI cables that are 1.0~1.2a. HDMI 1.3~1.4 cables are technically DVI-D Dual Link.Fudoh wrote:technically a HDMI cable is a single link DVI-D 18+1 cable

Re: Xbox360 + LCD monitor with DVI-D
nope, not true. Only HDMI cables using a Type B connector are Dual Link (and that's no matter if HDMI 1.0 or 1.3 is used). The typical HDMI connector we all know from the 360, PS3 or our TV is a type A which is always single link. Type B's is much larger and has - naturally - more pins.
If you can find a DVI-D to HDMI Type A cable with 24 pins on the DVI-D side, buy it, open it up and you'll see that the additional wires aren't connected to the HDMI connector after all.

Would this work? ebay link
Re: Xbox360 + LCD monitor with DVI-D
I see. I have a DVI-D Dual Link to HDMI A cable, but never bothered to take a closer look at it. I just assumed that all the pins were connected, so I figured it had the same bandwidth as an actual Dual Link cable.Fudoh wrote:If you can find a DVI-D to HDMI Type A cable with 24 pins on the DVI-D side, buy it, open it up and you'll see that the additional wires aren't connected to the HDMI connector after all.
Yes, that'll work.rolins wrote:Would this work? ebay link
