Recommend me books for american culture, society economy etc

Post by elfhentaifan »

im looking for books and lectures (private learn material) about todays USA, like about the todays society there, the economy, history (but less of that) etc.
I know thats kind of a very unclear question since there must be tons of this.
But is there anything highly recommendable or something thatd give me plenty of information and knowledge?

thanks in advance...

Although I am not American, I might recommend reading Don Delillo's Underworld. Fictional of course, but seemed to say something about American identity to me, more than most non-fictional texts.

USA! = Toaplan, Data East, and Leine's
Europe = Cave, Treasure, and mouldy dairy products

Tough choice...I love Kloster Weltenburger's beers.

First thing that came to my mind was Bomb the Suburbs by William Upski Wimsatt. Read this in college in '04, quite interesting.

If you want something a bit lighter there's always Stephen Colbert's "I Am America (and So Can You!)", though I'm not sure if you'd have to actually live in the US to get most of the jokes or not.
