Gunbird PS1 vs Psikyo collection PS2 Gunbird ????

Post by Super Laydock »

I tend to dislike threads like these, so I apologize in front.

That said, I'd really like some feedback on this before buying...

Having played both Gunbird 1 through MAME & on Saturn (which supposedly is the superior port),
I'd like a copy on a platform I actually like & have ready to play.

So I am looking to get the first installment of this series to play on my PS2,
Now there are 2 options for me:

-PS1 original port
-PS2 Psikyo Gunbird collection

Of those 2 which is the better port if there's any difference at all that is.
I don't care about the GB2 extra on the collection since I own and love the fantastic DC port already so it's not to be played anyway.

Using "search" got me nowhere as usual, so any feedback is appreciated. :)

Since I own the XSGames port of Gunbird under the official game title of Mobile Light Force, the storyline for all the characters has been removed entirely. By removing it, it tends to detract from the little break in between stages like how it was on the original arcade PCB iteration. Plus there was no tate mode to implement since the original Japanese PSX version of Gunbird didn't have it as well. ^_~

I'd stick with the Mame version if you want the whole Gunbird experience unaltered, of course the PCB is the one to play/own. Jaleco USA officially distributed Gunbird PCB kits Stateside staring back in May 1995. I do have a USA region Gunbird PCB with May 1995 revision stickers placed on some of the eproms. Honestly, I'm really not sure if any major or subtle changes were made to the Gunbird PCB release for it's USA debut compared to it's Japanese PCB counterpart. ^_~

Thanks for your once again very in depth reply PCFX! :)

And though I agree that the original (via MAME) would be the best choice, it's just that I dislike playing via MAME & am not in the market for the PCB atm.
I just want to be able to play it on a convenient set up that I have "set up" atm, which is a JP PS2.
If the JP PS2 iteration lacks the storyline "cutscenes" as well, it would be a no no, since they totally add to the experience for me.
So, assuming the PS2 NTSC-J version is complete, which is the best version:

PS1 NTSC-J or the NTSC-J PS2 version on the collection?

The PS2 version on the collection. It retains tate and the storyline sequences.

Since I don't really care for tate (my current set up would be highly inconvenient for this), this isn't an argument pro or con for me.
Glad to hear the story sequences are intact anyway.
But in what way aside from tate option does the PS1 rev differ from the PS2 collection one.
I must admit that I am a sucker for PS1 packaging as opposed to PS2 DVD style, but really just want the best version of those to play.

The 32-bit versions have art galleries. They're both fine but neither of these is the best version anyway so does it really matter?

I don´t care about galleries and am sure I would enjoy either of the versions anyway.
Basically I am asking if there is any difference quality wise between PS1 and PS2 versions?
And if so... what? (GB2 is a non argument as said b4).

I know the original is the best and the saturn port seems to be preferable, but I just need an opinion on the PSX incarnations.

The PS1 version only has Original 2 (lovingly referred to as "wobble mode") as a display format. The PS2 collection version has either tate or fully scaled yoko (it does not have either Original 1 [80% screen area] or Original 2 [wobble mode]).
