Creator of Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands dies.

I suppose this is old news now but in case it hasn't been mentioned before, I tought I might.

Fukio Mitsujo was one of those that could infuse an arcade game with fun and style. In a way, it was like you were being challenged more directly by the designer when you played a game back then - designer and player had a kind of rapport. Those were the days. (Indie game designers ought to strive for something like that).

Does anyone know which other games he designed? Chack'n Pop is one of them, right? What about Fairyland Story?

From reading that brief report it seems like he was responsible for Volfied. A game I liked a lot in the arcade. In which case its a damn shame . Kidney failure etc .

I LOVE Volfied (and Ultimate Qix on Genesis) - that game is the addiction for me!

I am sad to hear this news, as I enjoy the Bubble Bobble games as well…

Although I like Fairyland Story more, Bubble Bobble is a great game. I don't know if that was created by Fukio Mitsujo though. Sad news either way, though.

It is indeed. He created such outstanding games, and he will be missed! BTW, if you have Taito Legends 1 for the PS2, there is an interview with him about why he decided to create Bubble Bobble. It's not something you have to unlock, either and it's definitely interesting and worth watching.

I hope this story is all over the "major" video game sites; this man deserves the honor.

Just wait until one of the 23 programmers for HaloMadden stubs his toe, it will be all over the Gam3r newz. Yeah, I went there. I'll have to watch the interview on my Legends game.

Found out about this a couple months ago, it saddened me as I love the man's creations. Some of his games happen to be personal favorites of mine (Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Volfied), when I found out he died it brought a tear to my eye because we won't see another developer like Mr Fukio Mitsuji ever again.

There's an English interview with Fukio Mitsuji from a couple of years back. Also, arcade-history credits him as staff on a couple of arcade titles I haven't heard of: Land Sea Air Squad and Storming Party.

I know Bubble Bobble, though. Thanks for the fun game, guy.

Never heard of the man to be honest.

That said if he was responsible for BB and RI sure made his life worthy of being remembered.
Those are games that left a (positive) mark on my soul (really!) and for that alone I hope he died in peace with himself.

Very sad news.

I have been playing Bubble Bobble on the Master System lately and it's one of my favorites for the system. Very nice port of the game with some features that the NES version lacks. It also runs at the correct speed on my system (NTSC, since I'm in the US).
