I remember Rob mentioning this site back in early 2008 in Best Albums of 2007. I finally joined it a few months ago for the useful genre-specific top 100 lists, and slowly started inputting my collection on the side. I've got about 1000 albums, so far added 250 on RYM and rated 100. Mostly metal so far, letters A-M.
Anyone else use RYM in depth? What's your name on there Rob? Mine is the same as here: http://rateyourmusic.com/~unsane

Re: rateyourmusic.com (RYM)
How is this any different from last.fm?
Re: rateyourmusic.com (RYM)
Not sure as i don't use Last.FM. Some differences i think are that RYM isn't an internet radio and it lets you input/export and rate your collection.
Re: rateyourmusic.com (RYM)
Last.fm is basically what audioscrobbler became, it's a tracking site that tracks all of your played music. So.. it basically displays your most listened to songs, composers, albums, and so on. It isn't an internet radio site.
This site seems to take a part of last.fm and run with it. I... don't think it's very useful.

RYM has been around since before lastfm I think. The main draw, at least initially, was the 'top album' lists either, all-time, by decade or by year - I've found tons of great stuff browsing lists and seeing what people with similar tastes to myself have rated highly. I don't think the ratings for new albums are worth much anymore since it seems most people give knee-jerk ratings after one listen.
You cannot stop me with Paramecium alone!

You don't but in my search for a site to catalog my collection, RYM has been by far the best option i've found.Elixir wrote:This site seems to take a part of last.fm and run with it. I... don't think it's very useful.

My name there is xox, but I disable most of the user page features. I mainly just use the site to find new stuff.
Last.fm is a dump of info that has little use unless you love "hyped artists" or really care what the last 10 tracks someone's played. Its charts are horrific, "similar artists" is the only semi-useful feature for finding new music.
This site's been around since 2000. It's much better organized and focused on the music rather than the people listening to the music. I've found lots of good (obvious and obscure) stuff by browsing rym.Elixir wrote:This site seems to take a part of last.fm and run with it. I... don't think it's very useful.

A great site to read reviews on a record you might be interested in.
