Memorable/Fun board games?

hah, I also played this a lot when I was a kid. It wasnt as advanced as D&D, so my dad joined in on the fun with my friends I.

LUDO is another great game for 4 players, and also remember playing Yahtzee a lot, but thats not exactly a boardgame.

Domino Rally was pretty cool as well. It usually worked. Except for the motherfucking rocket.

I had a few Domino Rally sets. It mostly worked okay, but the loose dominoes fell over way too easily. You had to be careful to put them down on the correct side (one side had a bump), and they were so light that a slight breeze on the opposite end of the earth would knock one over and mess up a good chunk of your setup. That game (or whatever you want to call it) pissed me off over and over, but I was too stubborn to give up.

Go is a wonderful game, and still quite fun even if you don't spend years on it. I definitely recommend trying it out if you aren't familiar with it. http://www.gokgs.com is a nice place to play online, by the way.

I played Carcassonne for a couple of years, but it got old. Same for Ticket to Ride, which is a good "gateway" game to get non-players to play. Power Grid is a very well crafted game, too, deep and fun with 3+ players.

Carcassonne is good in small doses, I think.

Ticket To Ride is quite a good game.. I've found that the Europe board is far more interesting to play on than the US one.

It's cool that both of the above are available on XBLA.


Power Grid is fantastic. Numerous maps to chose from and two different plant decks give the game a hell of lot of depth and variety.

Other favourites include Puerto Rico (I just never grow tired of this game), Race for the Galaxy and Pandemic (4 players team up against the AI [read: deck]).

Pandemic would be some awesome shit on Live.

It's time for the board game thread resurrection, as I've been enjoying many great games recently.

While I haven't played Settlers, Ticket to Ride or Carcassonne in literally years, I found myself playing lots of Puerto Rico (the 2 player variant is surprisingly good, even if the game is better with 3-4 players), Agricola and mostly Caylus. Man this game is pure excellence... Don't let yourself be indtimidated by Calus' reputation of being a "heavy", "long" game. After my first game (2 players, 1h30) I found 2 players can play a game in roughly one hour, which is excellent since my real life limits my game time considerably. If you've ever been considering it, don't pass it up, seriously. There is a podcast around that's very useful to learn how to play the game by yourself before you can teach it to someone else. It's lenghly, but really worth it. The rulebook is not the clearest.

I love board games. I have a decent collection. The Carcassonne games are my all-time favorites, but lately I'm enjoying Tigris & Euphrates quite a bit.

I also wish I was much better at Go, as I really love the game, but just don't feel smart enough for it.

I've been tempted to buy Ticket to Ride but never feel like it's worth it when I hardly ever invite my friends over.

I went to visit some relatives this summer, and my cousins made me play this Battlestar Galactica game. Definitely memorable, but I didn't find it all that fun. Complicated as all Hell, we played for 5 hours the first night and barely made it to the second half of the game, with having to explain the rules to the noobs (myself and at least one other) and even the experienced players having to look up the rules themselves. Things went a bit quicker the second night...

Anyway, I'm not sure how I feel about these licensed games. Somehow the mechanics don't seem as well thought-out as these other games.

I play Carcassonne (all expansions except the new one with bridges, which I'll buy, and the one with the silly catapult), Axis & Allies, Munchkin, Blood Bowl, Space Hulk and a variety of lesser games in person with my friends.

I also have and recommend Dominion (all expansions), but I mostly play it online at brettspielwelt.de.

I own a copy of vanilla Dominion and enjoy it, but I rather take out something else when I have someone over to play.

Makes much more sense for me playing it online, as buying all the expansions would cost me a fortune.

I've always liked the classics (Risk, Monopoly, Scrabble et al) but my gf's dad lives and breathes boardgames. In the past 5 years or so, I've picked up Settlers, Flux, Carcassone, Commands and Colors, a few Columbia block games (Hammer of the Scots), Blokus and a few others. I've even tried his main game, Advanced Squad Leader. I'd really like to try Agricola at some point.

I'm going to introduce him to Skirmish Wars -- basically a print-out board version of Advance Wars.

I didn't know about German style board games until a little over a year ago. I downloaded the Catan demo for XBLA knowing nothing about the game, and I bought it despite thinking it would just be a fun little distraction for a while. To this day I still play it on a regular basis. Based on that I also bought Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride on XBLA, which I also liked but not as much.

Hopefully more games like this come to XBLA, since I don't think I could get my friends to get together to play these (definitely not on a regular basis, anyway). Risk just came out, but meh. Even with automated fighting (no tedious dice rolling), it doesn't hold my attention like the German-style games do.

I bought this game over a year ago, but the initial learning curve was a turn-off, so I set the game aside and forgot about it for a long time. Two weeks ago, totally out of the blue, my girlfriend suggested we try playing it. I played several games with her, which was really fun, and now I'm playing online whenever I get the chance. I gotta get the expansions.

Does anybody have any board game suggestions for DS? I see Catan and Carcassonne have official ports, although it looks like they were only released in Germany. Also, I'm sure there are some home brews... Puerto Rico for sure, although I'm not familiar with that game (all I know is that it's very good ).

Also, the RFTG server has been down for like a month now.

I have fond memories of Mensch ärgere dich nicht and chess I used to play with my family. Recently Culdcept reminded me of those days. Also, Battleship was fun at school and home.

I play The Settlers of Catan. I own a physical set but nobody wants to play with me so I have to play online

I find it is a very well designed game that accomodates a lot of different strategies. It's also non-violent which is a plus for me That doesn't mean there are not any nasty things you can do to the other players though!

Unfortunately the base game is for 3-4 players, and apparently the game mechanic is a little broken when using the 5-6 player expansion. If you have a big group of people, it's probably better to have multiple 3P/4P games going on since the expansion is about the same price as the regular game.

Some friends got my wife and I into this before Christmas and we ended up buying/playing it w/ my family back home over Christmas for like a week straight

Played the European version with the same folks that got me into Catan. Pretty fun, but I need more time with it to determine if I like it as much as Catan.
