GearToyGear - Kenta Cho
GearToyGear - Kenta Cho
Wasn't someone talking about tunnel shmups recently?
Kenta Cho has just released a new one. Someone play this for me; my computer is too old for XNA.

Finally got it to work. You need XNA 3.1 (3.0 isn't good enough), and xinputemu to use any joystick other than 360 gamepad.
Was it worth it? Absolutely. Cool game, just a bit confusing.

Re: GearToyGear - Kenta Cho
I finally got around to trying this. I think Torus Trooper is a LOT better.
I don't care for the graphics. It's hard to tell what's going on, and I have a hard time determining if I'm going to hit something or not (perhaps my pseudo depth perception sucks). I especially struggle with the bars near the edge of the tunnel; I can never tell if I can squeeze through or not. On top of that, it's not very pretty or even trippy IMHO.
The scoring system seems to be just like the one from Gunroar. It worked really well in Gunroar, but it doesn't work so well in this game because of all the visual confusion.
I might spend a little more time with thus, but overall I don't see myself playing this much in the future.
Is there a way to get fullscreen? I didn't see an option.

Re: GearToyGear - Kenta Cho
Holy crap this is like Omega Boost tube sections in surreal version and at 900km/h+. Awesome stuff. Like Torus Trooper but on steroids.
Mounting Visual C#+XNA to get this working was a pain in the ass. I assume Kenta Cho is silently telling us to start making our own shooters with this clever move.

Re: GearToyGear - Kenta Cho
I installed XNA 3.1 and now it works, but I strongly prefer Torus Trooper.
Level design is outright mean: large hitbox + small gaps between fast enemies + plenty of indestructible obstacles = unfair death.

I just grabbed it, not too bad, but yeah, it's pretty visually confusing. Just pay no attention to the tube itself, it isn't important.
My only problems were that there were things COMING FROM BEHIND YOU THAT YOU COULDN'T SEE AND WHAM YOU DIE, and that the hitbox felt larger than the ship.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: GearToyGear - Kenta Cho
The hitbox seems definitely larger than the ship; maybe the enemies have invisible fringes.null1024 wrote:My only problems were that there were things COMING FROM BEHIND YOU THAT YOU COULDN'T SEE AND WHAM YOU DIE, and that the hitbox felt larger than the ship.
Enemies coming from behind could be an illusion (some thing are so damn fast that they can only be seen after they have collided with you); at least I hope so.

Re: GearToyGear - Kenta Cho
Enemies coming from behind don't have collision damage, and they only start shooting when they're in front of you. I don't see any problem with them.

Re: GearToyGear - Kenta Cho
You only need to install this and the game to get it running: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... eb3e799ef2
You dont need to install XNA itself.
the game ran too slowly on the pc I tried it on but looked promising.

Re: GearToyGear - Kenta Cho
Thanks - finally got it working.
Am I right in thinking there's no shooting? Just dodging and speeding up or slowing down? The instructions seem to imply you can destroy enemies, but I can't quite figure it out... or don't think I have...

Re: GearToyGear - Kenta Cho
If you get in front of an enemy your ship fires homing lasers at it.

Re: GearToyGear - Kenta Cho
ah cool - thanks, now I got it. The faster you go the more points you get too, I guess.
I do kind of like that auto-shot idea, instead of just holding down a button all the time. It seems obvious, but I can't think of another game that depended exclusively on the same mechanic.
