My choice for STGT

Post by Ed Oscuro »

We should all play this and donate our points* to Game Galaxy because DreamTR needs funds to dump his protoz...or something, I dunno.

I think that nice "American-style" shmup makes a better case for real arcades than anything else.

* You have to sell your personal information to the satan dressed up as the Cadbury Bunny to donate points, though, whoops.

Being the big sucker I am, I actually did donate my 86K points from the first run, it was pretty bad though. Copypasta from the Digital Press thread:
Things wrong about that game (visible through just one playthrough):
-Enemies that can't be shot, enemy bullets that can't be dodged, bosses that can be sine-waved to death and have no real attack to speak of (layer another attack on top of that one and maybe we'll have something that can give Truxton II's first boss a run for its/her money), no autofire but no reason for button mashing, non-configurable buttons, oh and a power bar, life gem, and INERTIA YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!

Things great about that game:
-Visuals, the music (the first loop anyway), character designs (the first 'taur looks like a monkey? Awesome, I chose the marsupial though)

Things lol about that game:
- Never once used the special attack

The stragglers at the bottom can be hit with the special attack. Yeah, horrible game.

That. Was. Effing. Terrible. Any time I'm pressing left for 4 seconds and still going right... well, there's a problem here.

Also, I'm on Linux, so it flickered a bit for some odd reason.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Okay, some pointers:

- Joy 2 key for the win, it even stopped the window resizing issue. Didn't seem to cause too much lag (the game already has inertia). Also, woo speeding bullet patterns!
- Croctaur seems to be the best (not the slimmest fighter, but the shortest, and has a shield)
- The shield is not harmed by bullets, the only way to make it go away is by colliding with the enemy. Tricky to use right. It also gives you a second or so of invincibility after it's depleted, handy.

If there's one nice thing to be said about the game, it's that it does get challenging as you keep playing, and the points come in faster (due to enemies spawning for a longer time).

How long does it take for the game to start to be even minutely amusing?

Stage 20, 114,850 points.

I got to 200K points and at least Lv.29, points came along a bit faster than they do at level 20 and with joy2key AF on some enemies were spawning after the boss was dead. Doesn't really feel too much improved over Lv.20, but it's a bit more engaging.

I think they were expecting people to peter out around 100K every time. Even with shield you have to be very careful about when you use it to prevent being smashed by waves of enemy bullets.
