So just how is KOF12?
Re: So just how is KOF12?
I've only played it once, but I did enjoy it. Yeah, they took a lot away from many of the characters. Its not a super serious KOF, but its not like its not KOF anymore. I'm trying to wait it out til its cheaper, but I might break down and pick it up real soon. Lack of a story or a boss, I couldn't care less. Lack of K, Billy, Mai....grrrr.... next years will be a lot better I'm hoping.
Oh, and a quick question, does anybody know if it plays in 4:3 without letterbox on the console? My xbox and ps3 are hooked up to different monitors, so I'd like to chose which version to purchase based on that.

Re: So just how is KOF12?
I think the fact that there is no story or boss means they were just trying to get the game engine down. Now that they have that they can flesh out the existing rota with more moves and a few more characters. It would be nice to knows what happens after the nest saga. Will rock Howard ever step up? and oh god yes MAI PLEASE!

It's not working though because few enjoy the new engine. Too bad, because I really like the simplification.

From Ignition's Facebook:
A glimmer of hope at least.Attention King of Fighters XII fans, we just wanted to let you know that we’ve been testing an upcoming software update with SNK PLAYMORE and the online play results have been very good! Quality Assurance is ongoing, and will update the fans on its release soon. Thanks!
Re: So just how is KOF12?
I'd have to say, after renting this game it wasn't as fun as the older games. still it looks amazing, but that doesn't justify making this a full retail release.

I say fuck them if they can't beta test their game and expect the customer to do it.

If you prefer KOFXII to '99 you have some justification. '99 is one of the worst old SNK ever turned out.mortified_penguin wrote:Same here.Ganelon wrote:It's not working though because few enjoy the new engine. Too bad, because I really like the simplification.

The bare bones-ness is a bit of a turn-off, but there are 3 redeeming factors that make me really like this game:
1.) The New Look - Aside from Terry, I love how everyone looks in this game (I have and always will be a fan of his MOTW outfit). People whining about no new characters need to realize that from a programming standpoint, they made 22 new characters for this game. Hell, they made a whole new game from scratch.
2.) The Balance - Despite those two infinites (Which I hear tell are next to impossible to get off consistently, at least for Athena) this is probably the most balanced 2D fighter I've ever played, even moreso with the fact that with the Critical Counter system you can just do a super instead of a long-ass combo string and still do some decent damage, giving the game a better learning curve for beginners. There are obviously still characters who are better than others, but the difference between the "best" and the "worst" is nowhere near as big as in games like Street Fighter IV or Blazblue
3.) Headbanging Fat Chicks

I barely remember 99... so yeah, I'd believe it wasn't any good. 2000 stands out as being the worst to me.Skykid wrote: If you prefer KOFXII to '99 you have some justification. '99 is one of the worst old SNK ever turned out.
I'd say 12 is definitely better than 2000 and 2001. And probably 99.

Re: So just how is KOF12?
I've played it some just now after getting it from an Amazon seller for $50. The new style is awesome and leaves you wondering what KOF XIII will be like with this type of graphics- hopefully coming sooner than later this time. For a canon KOF, SNK couldn't bring back Mature- but they still have 21 characters ready if you count Elisabeth.
Bringing in three more existing characters (Oswald and two others) and another New Faces Team for 6 more characters to make 27 wouldn't be bad. As for the boss- don't make him a projectile spammer extraordinaire like Magaki. Do bump the AI up a tad to make it on par with SF 3rd Strike. The main single player game should revert to score attack, with time attack still available as an alternate mode ala Street Fighter IV.
I'll forgive the low number of characters for now in light of this being a full overhaul. The CPU AI is a tad lacking though. As I expected, KOF XII isn't the '98 killer but it still doesn't suck.

Has SNK made a fighting game boss in recent years (and I'll let 5 or so years be recent, why not) that hasn't been dumb as hell and completely busted? I don't expect them to make a new boss any different than their usual hahahahityouagajilliondamagewithrandomspamattacks escapades.gameoverDude wrote:As for the boss- don't make him a projectile spammer extraordinaire like Magaki. Time for a Rugal resurrection. Considering Clark looks like he's built like a truck, I think they could do some decent designs for the old 'R'.

Re: So just how is KOF12?
The new Ralf design reminds me an awful lot of Alex from SFIII. I like it.Skykid wrote:Time for a Rugal resurrection. Considering Clark looks like he's built like a truck, I think they could do some decent designs for the old 'R'.
Jin Fuha's cameo appearance is a cool touch, but IMO it would've been better still to see him as a playable character. FF1's Hwa Jai is one character who could be interesting if revamped some for a future KOF (allow him to drink the mystery bottle more than once, like Shun in VF).
If I made the next SNK boss: I'd give him better AI than the regular fighters, but not make him do outrageous amounts of damage or be otherwise overpowered. (i.e. Virtua Fighter Dural, or SFII M. Bison are not "SNK bosses", thank goodness- these two win on their AI alone.). There'd be no Orochi/Magaki "Glowing Screen of Death" supers or SF3 Gill style "resurrection".
We need a KOF XII Black Label with Rugal added as a "Bonus Stage" end boss, Mature & Elisabeth added to the arcade version, maybe about 2-4 other characters, and improved CPU AI.

2000 was a lot better than the games bookending it. The striker stuff isn't balanced at all, but it can still be fun to play versus casually, while there isn't much reason to try '99 or 2001 unless you want to run though single-player and fight the bosses.Cthulhu wrote: I barely remember 99... so yeah, I'd believe it wasn't any good. 2000 stands out as being the worst to me.
2000's engine was also used for KOF EX2, which for a GBA fighter was pretty decent.

Re: So just how is KOF12?
Sorry to drag up the old thread, just wondered how people found this now everyone has had a chance to play it.
After initially thinking it was seriously flawed, I came to a slight turnaround after getting some more arcade time:
It's certainly not the worst fighting game out there, it hangs together well enough - but it's not up to KOF standard.
It's sluggish to play, lost the feel of KOF's fast combos and tactile moves, and really frustrating when things just don't work properly. I don't think it should have been released in the state its in, and I'm not surprised at how quickly it was getting ignored in Asian arcades. Those guys know a quality beat em up, and although it has pretty sprites (designs debatable) KOF12's handling is just too full of fail.
To be honest, these Playmore guys have never been up to scratch on a single release compared to old SNK, and I'm bored of waiting.
I sold my copy yesterday. How is everyone else finding it?

I've had the home version for a while now and after extensive play, I'm sadly reverting back to my original thoughts - this game is broken. It just ain't KOF. It's not that it's 'new' or 'updated' - using those as excuses is silly - it's just that it doesn't work properly. I've seen high level players make it look good, but that doesn't mean shit, I've seen high level players make Pit Fighter look good.To cap it all off though, this is fun. Certainly more fun than I initially thought, and once you make the adjustment to character size, move and jump range, the number of odd bugs that crop up, and the slower react time of special moves (do that burn knuckle motion early!) there's still plenty to look forward to in the future.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

KOF XI was really good, I thought. I like XII as well, but the crap online and the severe lack of competition in my area make it hard for me to wanna pick it up more.Skykid wrote: To be honest, these Playmore guys have never been up to scratch on a single release compared to old SNK, and I'm bored of waiting.
