Is Thunder Dragon the same thing as Thunder Blade??Rob wrote:Haha, no. The game just doesn't feel right for a number of reasons. Avenger, Gyrodine, Thunder Dragon. There sure are a ton of the left and right tilting helicopter shooters but there is only one Zero Gunner 2.

Nope. Thunder Dragon is a vertical scrolling shmup from NMK with ships that resemble the marine carrying craft in the movie Aliens, while Thunder Blade is a 3D and top view shmup-ish helicopter game by Sega.scavenger4 wrote:Is Thunder Dragon the same thing as Thunder Blade??Rob wrote:Haha, no. A tough one... I voted "both win" in the end. Under Defeat looks amazing and is mostly fun to play, but there is one problem, quite integral to most shmups: It gets really boring to grind the first stages over and over again, since there isn't very much you can do differently or better there. In Ketsui at least there's ceaseless action and chaining right from the start, but I don't like bullet hells so much in the long run... Zero Gunner 2 on the other hand is just mad fun all the time (because of the rotation), and the 2-player mode works well.
ZG2's bosses are more interesting, but ZG2's problem is that it's too much of a fast and light arcade action, feels easy but ends up eating credits. Also, it's infuriating that you can't freely map controller buttons in the DC port, if only I could have the rotation in the triggers.. would be so much easier to shoot and rotate at the same time.
The ultimate game would be a cross between these, combining UD's art direction and explosions with ZG's rotation and selectable start stages, and throw in some Desert Strike to give longevity and interesting missions. Well, I'd settle for an UD 2 too

Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

Very funny how this was necroposted back to life for a Desert Strike mention.
And yet, such an old thread, and no love for Gyrodine.

Even moreso considering Urban Strike effectively obsoletes the rest of the series (we'll just purge those abysmal on-foot missions from memory.Shatterhand wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 4:06 pm Very funny how this was necroposted back to life for a Desert Strike mention.

Replying all these years later just to say:
Zero Gunner 2 is one of the greatest shmups ever made
