If you could make a shmup what would you called it?
Might as well throw in mine...
I'd call it "King of Fighter 2002" and have the attract sequences and stuff look just like a fighting game, except the gameplay itself is like a Pulstar clone...
So all the people wanting to play a fighting game will sit down and drop in their quarters, and then find out they're playing a shmup. Hopefully it will get more people playing shmups, since the ratio of KoF players to shmup players at my school's arcade must be like 10:1 or more at any given time...

Alternately, it could also signify a manic Pokemon-themed shooter. That could actually be kinda interesting, come to think of it...use different elemental types of Pokemon to defeat and "catch" others to use, and you can "evolve" some of 'em if you score well enough, a la Psyvariar...as long as they have a level where you can finally blast the living daylights out of Pikachu I'll be sold.TheSacrificed wrote:the french version will be called MonPachi

you forgot the ever-tiring. i am looking for information about that day. do you know anything about that day? i'm surprised i beat that game (i loved it, but love only takes you so far). two was better, but partially because i didn't have to listen to an english dub.MovingTarget wrote:'I'm looking for the man who killed m father, do you know who killed my father? And by the way, are you a sailor?'CMoon wrote:Shenmue Explosions: (A) TALK (B) GIVE UP
You have the most powerful craft in the sky with awesome firepower and hyper-destructive bombs, but you'll spend most of this game talking to all the hundreds of other ships (and dodging their incoming fire), tracking down the man who killed your father and asking where sailors hang out. Levels are absolutely huge, but not much really happens there...
This is a big game with several installments, premiering on the DC, but the second installment was snatched up for the Xbox, and with no future installments in sight, no one knows how this series will end.
haha
anyway, if i made a shmup i'd give a terrible name like "Kitten Playing with a Ball of Yarn." so no one would play it, but it would be really awesome, so there would be this really exclusive group of people talking about this really awesome shmup called "Kitten Playing with a Ball of Yarn."
yes, i am a moron, and i am amused by little things.
I have no sig whatsoever.
Wow, I'd forgotten 'do you remember THAT day?', damn that game was funny.
I guess I was also thinking when I wrote that how many games there have been where you have a totally over-powered character but you can't actually effectively use all their power (or any of it). C'mon, how many bosses in Metal Gear Solid 3 should have fallen in about 2 seconds after eating all of your arsenal, but of course they are ammune to everything but some obscure gay attack (I guess they are all wearing missle proof jackets???!!) So it only made sense that there should be a shmup where all you can do is talk...

Yup, it's a PC game.mirkvid wrote:isnt there an old game with the title "if it moves, shoot it"? that would be perfect for a shmup!
CGA and EGA graphics. I don't think it supported VGA.
I think I may have a copy back at my parents house somewhere.
Very slow moving game. But for the time, not bad. 4 levels if I remember.

Well I'm not too good at it to be honestIlMrm wrote:I haven't heard of this game. How is it?SheSaidDutch wrote:IlMrm Will that be the sequel to Battle Formula(NES)![]()
There are some unique/funny/cool ideas in this thread.

I would say It's on a par in terms of graphics of Recca,Crisis Force IMO esp the swaying bridge rails..
It took me awhile to get used to actually getting past the first batch of enemies.
One the first level you get to control a car (with a turret) that you can change direction of.
It's what Spy Hunter should have been!
(I'm finding this game hard to describe to be honest)
check the xenocide file page
I think I'm abit burned out

Thanks. I looked it up in the xenocide files after you mentioned it, and my first impression was it looks like Spy Hunter. Shmups where your character is a vehicle is cool(not too many I'm afraid).SheSaidDutch wrote:Well I'm not too good at it to be honestIlMrm wrote:I haven't heard of this game. My game would be a "on-rail" shooter like Starfox 64 (I know, I know... that's no real shmup.)
The general look of the game would be a lot like "Einhänder", cold future styled.
You'd play in a team like Starfox 64, with a lot of dialogues during gameplay. But the characters are serious looking a bit anime styled. With pretty interesting enemycharactes.
I don't know what I would call it, but it should be an unusual name that sounds somehow tough: Maybe something like "Testament"!
It would be a game for a console, so you play it with a joypad. You have a normal shot that you can power up, and you also have a secondary weopon. (that must be refilled after its used)
While holding the R-Button you can open the nose of your ship where you have a reflector for laser weopons. But you have to target the enemies laser or else you get hit. And you can't reflect all kind of bullets, only laser-type weopons. After you have successful "caught" your opponents laser, it will be shot back as a huge laser ray, you have to move your ship to control the direction of that "counter-laser" and you also can get combo scores with that feature. There are a lot of opportunities in the game to get better scores. Like multiplier, many score items appearing, Boss parts and that usual score shooter stuff...
This game would have a lot of very fast and unique "rail"-routes through many different areas like a huge future capital, strange planet surfaces with a lot of unusual plants and rocks, undergrund factory. And really epic boss fights like a spectacular chase of a highspeed train on magnet rails into an undergroud base through a weird tunnel system.
Also you can play storymode with cutscenes or the highscore attack mode. In storymode you can select one of your 4 teammates, that's similiar to the difficulty level. If you choose the leader your route through the levels is different and you are supposed to play a lot of harder patterns in the levels. In this mode you also can use some continues (but they are limited).
The soundtrack would be a heavy rock music mixed with traditional orchestral instruments like in Guilty Gear, but to be better suited for this kind of game a bit more electronic stuff.
In Highscore Attack you play a special route with the toghest parts from the 4 "difficulty-levels". And lots of patterns are a harder than in the storymode. You also can't continue and there are no cutscenes.
But first, in Highscore Attack mode you have to create an account, which should be uploaded with the games internet features (but you must not upload it). While playing this mode your "play" will be recorded, like the "Play and Record Input..." command of "Mame" and if you have a new highscore your "Input File" will automatically be saved and compressed.
When you upload your account data, your "Input Files" will be send to the companies server and checked. If your Input File is Ok (and you not cheated) then it will be added to the Internet Highscore Rankings.
Which are listed for each country and you also can check the continents ranking (Europe, America, Asia) and the world rankings. You also can download the Input Files from other players if you want to.
Sorry, I got a bid carried away...
Just contiue with that thread and don't mind this post.
@Spoon:
Your games sounds pretty interesting, but I think it would be even more interesting if you could switch during the game between the death and life state somehow.
Maybe if you got hit in the life world you can play as dead, and wait for a chance back to the life world. When beeing in the death world you are attacked by ghosts and restless souls which can't be seen alive. And not all attacks that hits you alive are getting you to the deathworld, there should be some attacks wich draw your soul out and kill you instantly.
Oh!
Or to get to the last level, the hero has to sacrifice his body to chase his enemy in the death world. Maybe he follows him into hell or something...
Respect Spoon, I think this gameconcept has a lot oppotunities for great and unique new ideas. I'd love to play a game like this...

I'll call mine KILL ME KILL ME NOW
- imagine a shmup and DDR combined. you have to dodge curtain fire, while at the same time, following the arrows DDR style! it's brilliant! it's killer! it's INSANE! it's a guaranteed hit! >3<
huhu, in all seriousness though, i'm actually in the preliminary stages of developing a game similar to that ... (not exactly DDR, but it does involve movement patterns) ... now if i could just get past my finals this week hm ...

Hell Revolution
TATE vertical, with a lifebar. Game takes from Psyvariar and Border Down with a branching path system. You're part of a unit, and your unit commander orders you to different strategic points (stage sections) based on your performance at the last juncture. You can see the others in your unit fighting in background sections, complete with radio chatter e.g. Ace Combat 04, or to a lesser extent, Silpheed TLP. Includes simulation missions for training, otherwise space based and planetary assault. Gradient hitbox, no damage to outlying ship sections, the closer to the cockpit or the engines, the more damage done/lifebar removed.
Naomi cart, why not, as long as I'm dreaming

Thanks Edge.
I thought a bit further:
Light:
Your ship has wings that grow per time and maybe faster if you scratch or something like that. Your main shot is stronger the bigger your wings are, your bomb will use up the wings as long as you press the bomb button (the larger your wings are the longer your bomb lasts). The secondary attack is more a shield which will also use your wings up.
Changing between the modes in game would indeed be cool but I can't think of a proper system at the moment (dying=death mode, 1up=life mode???).

I'd like to make and name two:
Final Fox™
Fire Fantasy™
I'm sure both would be pretty awesome (most likely horizontal).

I know this is an old post.IlMrm wrote:The title will be "Oh Crap!"
Your character will be a car, and the enemies are animals. The bullets will be their crap, shaped like crap. The worst will be the diarrhea spray.
A) Shoot B) Bomb(Toilet Flush)
Levels will include a bridge, highway, city streets, and a park.
There's pink, blue, orange, yellow, purprle bullets, and now there will be brown!
This will entice the young generation to shmups, since the young generation loves anything that has crap in it.
But there's a game called "Oh Shit!" for MSX. It was sold in Europe and all.
It's a Pacman clone though, not a shmup. It's better than the oficial MSX Pac-Man game. And when a ghosts gets you, the game shouts very loudly "OOOOOOOH SHIIIIIIIT!". It was cool because it had lots of speech in a 1986 MSX game, which was very uncommon. The opening would introduce the ghosts saying "This is Joey, Paul, Willy and Frankie", and when you are out of lives, the game says "Game Over!". It was very cool.
Those same guys also made a Zaxxon clone which was better than the MSX Zaxxon game (Which was pretty good) called Jet Bomber, with lots of speech... in the opening it would say JE-JE-JE-JE-JET BOMBER. And they at the start of each live "Destroy the rebels! Three, Two, One, Take-Off!" And stuff. It also had the Star Wars theme on the title screen, which always made me feel there were no lawsuits on the 80s or something.
