bugs glitches and anomalies

thought we could start a thread discussing some of the unintended abnormalities and bugs.

ones that spring to mind:

cave
dodonpachi end of stage bonus (not calculated properly in 2nd loop unless you play on the 2P side ???)
dodonpachi stage 5 boss freezes and doesn't shoot if you take his health bar below 50% while he's half off-screen
esprade boss milking (which i gather they knew existed, but didn't think anyone would suck enough to actually do it :lol: )
guwange counter-stop
ketsui and the bouncing bomb :lol: as well as the demo screen crash
mushihimesama score boards do not save properly
mushihimesama crashes if you play the TLB with two players ???
espgaluda 2 demo bug, and green gems glitch on stage 2
pink sweets crashes on stage 6 / score attack mode
daifukkatsu counterstop on 1-5 :lol:


only other ones that i can think of are bakraid's first version being counter-stopped (???), and mars matrix arcade being counter-stopped on stage 3 :lol:

what other ones are there...?

Dangun Feveron, stage 3 boss. He can sometimes dissappear off the side of the screen for like a minute. :?

ah true, i forgot about those. what's the criteria for the esprade 200 mill bug..?

and didn't cools manage to gain invincibility on his raiden dx board, and he just left it on for 24 hours without a death...?

May as well. I know most of this is from a particular website but I've tried (or encountered) most of this

-Battle Garegga: Not sure if intentional, but has symbols on the high-score screen if you get a letter score.
-the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil: During Marisa type B's bomb, some enemies do not show up.
-Perfect Cherry Blossom: Cherry count displays symbols (actually, pieces of images I think) whenever it reaches 1,000,000... yet the Cherry Max count displays as normal. There's a fix for this.
-Perfect Cherry Blossom: Random event causes the stage 4 boss fight to proceed funny; sometimes the boss(es) will hang on a particular attack that lasts all the way through the stage clear screen lol
-Imperishable Night: Particular character switching with the second team causes crazy damage.
-Phantasmorgia of Flower View: Saving replays is weird, sometimes it will crash. There is a way around this, though I dunno how often it works because it's never crashed on me when I've used it.
-Shoot the Bullet: Hangs up for some reason, every now and then. All you can do is restart the program (seeing as it only does this on the mission select, no harm done)
-Mountain of Faith: During power level 3, you get broken as hell firepower if you don't focus. Owns. There's a fix for this.
-Mountain of Faith/Subterranean Animism: Some of the later stages bork up in replays. moozooh says that starting the replay on the stage before and not turboing through the loading screens and dialog seems to fix this. Dunno how far it goes.
-Subterranean Animism: Skip the Extra Stage mid-boss fight by throwing a bomb at the right time lol
-Subterranean Animism: Also if you clear Easy after you've unlocked the Extra Stage, it's supposed to lock the Extra Stage until you beat Normal again. Have not tried this. Hell, I wonder if you could just credit-feed through Normal and somehow get it back anyway

The vids I've seen show it done in the final bonus calculation. I don't think it can be done before level 5.

At least in the Dimensions version of R-Type the Force can sometimes get stuck in the scenery...just had it happen when I was about to fight Stage 6 boss. That didn't go too well.

That's not a bug ! 2P side only has slightly different scoring rules than 1P, like in EspRaDe.

Not inclined to say yes. Some safespots could even be taken as intentional (and I want to say Touhou has some of these).

-Mountain of Faith: Surviving a survival card still gives you points, but you still take the -30,000 Faith penalty. Half-intentional?

While playing Battle Garegga, I managed to get above 990K in score. I took a bullet on my last life and the shrapnel pushed it over 1,000,000 for the extend. When my plane came back up, it still showed one in reserve. Two extends at once!

If you pause while playing Gate of Thunder, the track keeps playing. When the track reaches the end, it stops. It doesn't loop. So you can play entire levels in silence if you so prefer! You'll only have sound effects.

Not a shmup, but in TG-16 Bonk's Adventure sometimes you can kill an enemy that gives meat right at the end of the level. Bonk walks off screen, and if the meat bounces over he'll eat it. He goes up, and then goes down. Way down. Automatically sends you back to the title screen regardless of reserve lives.

In NES Gradius, if you grab maximum speedups, its possible to move right through some bullets. You won't touch them long enough for it to register as a hit. Used in the Tool-Assisted run.

How come no one said Omega Fighter Special?

Getting killed by score digits is way too fun to be forgotten. Game crashing randomly, level-skip by holding start at the beginning of the level... there are more things I can't remember now.

Doesn't Darius Gaiden has some bug where you score millions of points out of nowhere?

That's happened to me at least once in R-Type Dimensions but I've never seen it in any other version I've played (over the last 20 years :? )

There is a more fundemental bug in the original that can result in the game completely hanging after killing an end of level boss:

While I'm not certain, I think it occurs if you die then one of your stray projectiles kills the boss - whatever causes it you get the neat end of level fanfare with no R-9 in the middle of the screen and then it just sits there...

This happened to me on the second level boss the first time I ever played my PCB :shock: Bit of a heart stopping moment but it's never occured since.

PS: Hi everyone, first post on the forum that's kept me entertained for a good year or so now :D

Something to do with destroying or not destroying particular parts of some bosses.
