Free first person shooters on the internet??...
I love Shoot The Core!'s awesome database of PC shmups. Anything similar for PC FPS's, if there are any??

Er not exactly, though you can start with DOOM engine games, Quake (three) Live, Battlefield Heroes (oh wait lol), and a handful of free engine demo type things.
Re: Free first person shooters on the internet??...
Nexuiz and Warsow are two free FPS games that I know of.

There's Cube that I know of [I've never played it though], and .kkrieger [it's really small, and also, I've never played it]. Don't know of a database of these things though.
PS: just remembered FreeDOOM. Played it myself, and I loved it. You need a BOOM compatible Doom engine to play it though [most modern ones are].

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

The Marathon trilogy is fun, and has a heck of a story for an FPS. http://source.bungie.org/get/

The king of deathmatch games, Quake 3, is free to play at QuakeLive.
Re: Free first person shooters on the internet??...
Most have been said already but:
Warsow
Nexuiz
QuakeLive
are all fantastic, hardcore deathmatch/1v1 games that are free to play and have plenty of players. The only other major free FPS I can think of would be Enemy Territory. I don't personally like it much, but lots of people do.

I forgot to mention the various iterations of America's Army...yay?
Re: Free first person shooters on the internet??...
I'm not sure, but I think that America's Army 2 has died since AA3 came out. And AA3 was a buggy piece of shit that no one plays.Ed Oscuro wrote:Mentioned in post #2captpain wrote:The king of deathmatch games, Quake 3, is free to play at QuakeLive.

That's what I've heard anyway. I know that the company that develops AA was shut down right after releasing AA3, so the series, and any support for AA3, is over now.

Correct on all counts. They made a big to-do about how the game had Steam Achievements, and that you can link your old AA 2.X account to the AA 3 account for a "Veteran badge," but half of the Achievements are broken (on Steam's site) and the veteran's badge requires mailing in. It's a hilarious, sad situation.
There was some hope in the weeks immediately following the shutdown of the original developer studio because there WERE some patches released - but I haven't seen anything in a while, and it's an open question about who's actually supporting it now. Heh.
The game would be decent if it wasn't so badly broken though.
Example type of bug seen on the AA Forum: The "invincible leen" [sic] where the hitbox DOES NOT correspond to the position of the model - you can use the tactical lean but shots at where your head appears to be don't collide with you (because your hitbox is as if you were standing straight up).
There's also another legendary bug called "gunface," no points for guessing what it is.

I don't think it was mentioned as the King of Deathmatch Gaming, the Choice of Champions, Ed.Ed Oscuro wrote:Mentioned in post #2captpain wrote:The king of deathmatch games, Quake 3, is free to play at QuakeLive.

Urban Terror is pretty cool. A bit too much obsessed with realism, but cool anyway.

It's hard to beat free Q3, certainlycaptpain wrote:I don't think it was mentioned as the King of Deathmatch Gaming, the Choice of Champions, Ed.

I kind of enjoyed running around the maps in that one (played a bit against bots I think). If you think it's a bit too much obsessed with realism, though, you should think about the flying kicks or look at the neon orange jumpsuit featured on the website right now. There's also another mod, Tactical Ops, that I often get confused with UT but I think is much better (a lot more "realistic" though).worstplayer wrote:Urban Terror is pretty cool. Re: Free first person shooters on the internet??...
I've never really thought of Urban Terror as "realistic". Fun game, though. If you play it online, just watch out for campers, because it's like a plague in that game. Much moreso than others I've played.
