A question: What's happened with Shoot the Core site?

Post by Gespenst »

I just wanted to ask : What's going on with STC (Shoot the Core)? Each time I open the homepage it only says Fedora Core Test Page, and the forum is forbidden. Is something's happened with its server?

looks like he's switching servers:

Seeing as how I haven't heard from the webmasters in about 6 months, I think it's game over.......fun while it lasted though.....

Oh no, that's horrible if true. Shoot the Core was an important pillar of the PC shoot 'em up community.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

But the STC blog has an entry about R-Type Tactics II posted on July 31... does the webmaster not also write that blog?

So I guess it's safe to say that you're officially pulling out from shmups?

I mean, IIRC, the last shmup-related video you've posted was your review of Thunder Force VI. Everything else from there has been 9/11 in the media stuffs.

I'll still play them and post on a forum here and there, but since the site is MIA, I don't see much point in putting much more effort into it. Things have been so slow with new releases (everything is a remake or update) that I haven't been motivated to produce new material. I dunno though, maybe some replay vids here and there.....

Its a shame cos the dojin database was really helpfull for finding all those obsure but great shmups. And i dont think there is another site out there atm to replace it.

Which imo is a bad thing cos ppl will miss some great games that arnt well known.

Should somebody use archive.org to copy and paste all the name drops from the database to somewhere here or is there a thread already that has jacked all the PC STG names from shootthecore?

Just found out about the vanishing of the website as well. :(

Are the people behind Moonpod the webmasters, since they offered you the webspace iirc and their site is still online?

Anyway, very sad to see this wonderful and dedicated site gone and I really hope it can either be reversed or passed on.
Though passing on would be strange since I can't imagine someone else being so passionate about the cause as Roger. :?

Let's face it, it is Postman's site and if he has no motivation to continue, the site will be dead no matter what.
I do hope all the info (especially the PC shmup database) will not be lost though for us as a resource.

Roger, I do hope a miracle happens, but if not:

Thanks for all your hard and passionate work!

A great site - and for me the best resource for PC-shmups.

My PC would not have been the same without this site and its
content.

Thanks for everything ....

If Postman agrees, I'd be willing to put whatever info he has left in form of text copies or screenshots into some kind of online database. I used the Shoot the Core database a lot and it'd be pity if it was lost forever...

Roger sent me the list, but it's plain text and it includes nothing but the games' names. It will be hell of a work to put together something like a database again which at least includes the company names and maybe a screenshot.

You'll have to pardon my ignorance because i know nothing about web sites . . .but I'm curious.

What happened to the database as it existed before the site went offline ??

I'm just a bit intrigued because that was the best site ever :!: :!:

The last version on Archive.org is dated Feb. 5 2008, with 1096 games in the database.

That's cool, at least the database is somewhat salvaged. I went and checked out what's left at archive.org and certain sections are sadly missing...

I'm helping to put a Shmup collection of every PC game prior to 2002 at Underground-Gamer.com and such a list would be great.

@ Fudoh:
Would it be possible for you to PM me the plain text list??? It would be of great help in putting the collection together!
