Dark Seal II PCB is now a Wizard Fire

Post by kebrank »

I got this original Dark Seal II PCB (world version, really rare) around a decade ago, it's like the japanese version but with all the text in english. It's not on mame.
A little label on the PCB shows Dark Seal II, Cocamatic (Spain amusement distributor), and the the S/N 000066. Dark Seal II is printed on every ROM and even the box where it came in is from Data East with Dark Seal II handwritten by the arcade operator that gave it to me long time ago.
To the story..., I took the PCB out of storage a couple of months ago for a quick play and the sound was scrambled so i sent the pcb for repair to somebody and finally got the pcb back last week. Sound is perfect but the board now boots as Wizard Fire. Nothing was reprogramed. ROMs look intact and the fix was just resoldering a couple of chips.
There is no test mode for this PCB. There is only one jumper to change from Mono to Stereo and the dipswitches are used for the normal things like coin/credits, difficulty, etc.
I'm really puzzled about this. Any idea? Maybe somebody in europe has another Dark Seal II PCB like mine and knows something more about it.
Thanks in advance,
\o/k.

0.131u3: Irongiant added Wizard Fire (Over Sea v2.1). Renamed (wizdfire) to (wizdfiru).

Was this your board that got dumped for MAME?

Curious - when it was working are you 100% sure the title screen said Dark Seal II?

Yes, the screen always showed Dark Seal II. And no my board never was dumped on mame.
I'm wondering if there is something that can trigger a region change. I know there are separate sets for wizard fire and dark seal II but this issue doesn't make sense unless there is a way to change the region. Something like canon dancer/osman where the romsets are exactly the same but an eprom has the region settings. Maybe wizard fire can be changed to Dark Seal II too. No idea ;(

Hmmmm, this is weird. I have Wizard Fire but the roms are not labeled at all. It almost looks as if it is a prototype to be honest. I'll be interested to hear what happened with your PCB.

Thank you for the link. Mine uses the same motherboard but it has more socketed ROMs.
This is closer to the japanese Dark Seal II PCB.

Can you take a picture or scan your PCB ?

No idea. They are on a daughterboard replacing the chips that you can see in the wizard fire PCB behind the group of 4 ROMs.

In case that you can't see them:

MOSEL
MS62256L-10PC
P9150 AA

Weird indeed there is no EEPROM on this PCB so no Osman/Cannon Dancer change can be done.

What exactly was fixed on the PCB ? Were the MOSEL chips always there ?

Yes, the PCB came with the MOSEL chips. The fix was resolder an OKI chip and another little one that i can't remember. Nothing else.
