Any hopes to revive the obscure tube shmup?
I'll be the first to admit that I don't care for Tempest but I really enjoy Gyruss. Does anyone enjoy smooth tube shmups (If there are anymore besides Gyruss)? Sure it is basically Galaga in a polar projection but somehow it feels a bit more fare than Tempest did/does. Does anyone like this style of shmup? Would there be any interest in a new quality game using the same motion principals?
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Just played Internal Section for a few hours the other day, pretty fun game I got to say. Talk about obscure, squaresoft of all people too. I find it a little strange how many similarities it has with REZ.
hmmm lets see, Nanotek Warrior is another on PS1 that fits the bill. Anyone try either of these?

Nitrous Oxide, or N2O on the PS1 is another rather decent tube shooter which I enjoyed playing.
Not just tube shooters, but I would hope for a revival of chase-view shooters like Space Harrier as well. When done right, these kinds of games can utilize both the speed and precision of 2D gameplay as well as the depth and complexity of 3D. Something like an updated version of Panorama Cotton with smooth scrolling and scaling would be to die for.

Planet Harriers on Naomi/Hikaru hardware was the last such shooter. Excellent game.SamIAm wrote: Not just tube shooters, but I would hope for a revival of chase-view shooters like Space Harrier as well. Considering the fact that Squaresoft and positron released iS: internal section before Sega and UGA (United Game Artists) did with Rez, I wasn't surprised at all. ^_~
Even Squaresoft USA did consider a proper Stateside release back in 1999-2000 but they decided against it in the end. It would've done quite well for it being regarded as an updated graphic designer's revisionist take on the ol' Tempest theme if they did release it in the USA. Ever notice how all the background color schemes work quite well for each given stage? In the art world, by utilizing a cluster of hot, warm and cool color groups that compliment each other, it manages to mesh quite well. Not to mention the flashy 640 x 480 interlaced mode that was used to display the silky-smooth arcade spec 60fps framerate as well. ^_~
It's been said that you don't need all twelve weapons based on the Chinese Zodiac calendar to beat iS from beginning to it's eventual end -- just only the essentials weapons (around six or seven at best). It's up to you to decide which ones are worth using to pull off a proper 1CC no-miss iS session. As the ol' saying goes: Practice makes perfect. ^_~
Even internal section's ending credits is interactive with the user being able to roll to the right or to the left if he or she desires.
PC Engine Fan X! ^_~

They're fun, but confusing to play at first and visually a little disconcerting, so they're not as popular as the various straight-forward alternative. Tube games are basically the female condom of shooters.

Didn't Kenta Cho make a tube shmup of some sort? I could be mistaken...
I've had fun with some (the oft-mentioned Internal Section and Gyruss are both tops), but I have a hard time any more commercial ones will be made. Maybe a doujin tube shmup is still possible though.

Torus Troopers. It's very good.Cthulhu wrote:Didn't Kenta Cho make a tube shmup of some sort? I could be mistaken...
I like those kind of shooters to an extent, but I really prefer regular hori/vert scrolling games. It's hard enough "reviving" that genre without worrying about the subgenre of tube shmups.

I'd be very interested in seeing a new games in this (sub)genre. I had fond memories of Gyruss and I also don't care for Tempest or bloom-heavy Tempest updates and remakes.
If you make one maybe it will start a trend and unseat arena shooters on XBLA.

Just played Lattice 200ec7 for the first time and it's made me want a tube shooter revival even more
