It's basically a renamed budget remake of Volfied with the original and a version with updated graphics. I think it was called something like "The Volfied" in Japan. The US name is a bit misleading, because there is nothing based on other Qix related games aside from Volfied in it. Good stuff, though.
The MD/Genesis Volfied also got a renaming for the US, Ultimate Qix.
My father's current wife could finish the Amiga version of Volfied without losing any lives and 99.9% every level.
Regarding gaming skills, It's the most astonishing thing I ever saw live, in front of my eyes, and I saw her doing this more than once, she could do it like 9 of each 10 times she played the game.
Her scores on Columns also were insane. But those were the only 2 games I ever saw she playing.

That's pretty intense. A friend of mine managed to 1cc Volfied once, I've never managed to come close.
How the heck do you 99% a level of Volfied?! That's some jedi mind tricks against the CPU right thur. I feel pretty badass when I complete level 1 over 90%, heh (and isn't 85% the minimum completion anyway?).
I've always thought it would be incredibly tough to do something like that consistently because of how random the appearance of power ups and some of the patterns are.

Trap the enemy in a small area, but without actually filling the rest (i.e. use long thin rectangles and leave a gap too small for it to escape). Every so often it will stop to attack, at which point you can hopefully trap it in an even smaller space. As you do this it will eventually get stuck in its smallest form (presumably because nothing else will fit). Once you've got the space really small, wait for another attack and close it off. Hazards include accidentally filling the external space and running out of shield.

So true. Gals Panic is way more fun than a game like that really should be.

"You're at shmups.com. We're all psychics full of righteous indignation!"
There can be no Qix without a fast and slow fill mode and a linear enemy with no eyes. I prefer my original Qix to the others. I do regard them all as fun however. I wonder if the GB version is worth a purchase? I have the NES cart on the way...
Also I do like the Qix, Super Qix, Volfied games in the Taito collections for PS2.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.
I found the GB version of Qix to be very fun, though it's not the hardest port of the game. The slow drawing is a bit slower than in some other versions. Qix is also one of the games that got a different version for Atari 5200 compared to the Atari 800 version. The 5200 version plays a bit faster and seems closer to the arcade.

If that's not the hottest thing a g/f can do, i don't know what is.
Well, being as she's your ex, I'll tell the truth It's not as hard as you'd think (at least on the Genny ver.) I actually turned it off after playing so long it wouldn't go any faster. There's a small delay before the piece locks in and when you get used to that delay, you are nigh unstoppable.

The PS1 Volfied is "Simple 1500 series Vol. 80 - The Jintori - Volfied 1500".
One time when I played Qix on a Space Invaders/Qix combo machine at Dave & Busters, I had the Qix suddenly dart into a box right as I was finishing it. I thought "Oh shit" as soon as the Qix got this close. No problem... the screen then filled in at 99% and this gave me a 25K special bonus.
Shame these cabs don't have Majestic 12 and Volfied in them as well.

Indeed, the Qix never really looses, he simply lets you pass a level out of pity on occasion.
