Monster Hunter 3

I noticed in one of the Wii threads there's at least a few people here that picked this up. First impressions and then some questions.

Impressions after ~2 hours (note that this is my first MH game ever):

- The controls are pretty good except for when you want to move just a little in town (usually end up jerking about and running too far)
- The Wii Classic Controller + is awesome! Super comfortable.
- The total lack of voices in the game seems cheap
- Swinging the "giant sword" is so ridiculously slow it seems unusable. Hopefully there's a way to speed it up a little, or maybe a better one will be even a little faster.
- This game seems to have drank the "making items is TEH FUTUAR OF RGPING!!!" kool-aid a bit too many times.
- Graphics are pretty good for a Wii game. Camera works but no-lock on (that I can find) is unfortunate.
- Haven't played online yet, but the box doesn't say it supports the voice attachment (which is fine by me, as I don't have one).


Overall, having fun.

Quesitons:

1) Is there a way to register monsters in the Hunter's Guide (or whatever they call it, I forget) with a classic controller? It seems to require pointing with the Wiimote, which ... seems rather dumb considering everything else can be done without one.
2) Should I keep the random junk spoils from fighting or just sell them?

Keep everything. It pays to combine stuff and expand your combo list as much as possible.

If you're short on cash, just kill some easy bosses or something.

Cthulhu: Great sword are meant to be sheathe all along until you get your timing right to do a unsheathe thrust attack (timing with charging as well)

Anyone going to play online here? I'm waiting for my Wii LAN adapter to arrive, hopefully before the end of this month.

I'm currently on 4* quests now, waiting to do the temporary urgent quest, repel sea dragon. Busy farming for materials and money now.

Capcom recently confirmed that the game is coming to the US. They just said "early 2010" if I recall correctly, so March definitely sounds reasonable. The game is pay-to-play online in Japan (after your free trial is up). There is no official word on the US status.

I'm 25 hours into MHFU right now, and I just completed the Hermitaur set thanks to some help online. It's a really good game, but I'm still HR1. Right now I'm just trying to clear as many quests as possible, but I'm getting tired of "collect 10 of x" quests, aka fetching quests with no real purpose.

I'm not sure but like, given the fanbase of MH outside of Japan now, I wouldn't be surprised if they did charge.

Well if we measure "fanbase" by the sales of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, it's not exactly something you would consider huge.
On the other hand... come on, it's the PSP. Who actually buys games for the PSP? (it's up to you if you put the emphasis on "buys" or "games")
I do hope they make it free, though.
Did someone play the demo here? I could use some hints to kill the stupid flying monster thing.
In roughly two weeks i will play the localized version at the gamescom, can't say i'm not excited =)

Still having fun but I'm -really- sick of the single map I have. I'm sure hoping there's more than a few zones - I was somewhat anticipating this would happen (most games in this vein tend to reuse maps a lot), but doing umpteen quests there is just getting old.

Is it possible to skip the yawn quests and just do the interesting ones. I do that often with banal RPG quests. Been thinking about trying the series but can't stomach BS.

No, this is the sort of game where you have to gradually build yourself into the interesting quests which require a fair amount of skill. There is no point in trying to kill Yian Kut-Ku on your first day, that isn't how the game is meant to be played.

That's anal of them. Even the worst RPGs will usually let you skip all the "collect 5 of" quests and the like and just let you do the story quests.

There, I finally got to a new area. Yay. Only took me ... um, like 5 hours. I'm glad I'm finally at the new stuff though. Seeing one of the giant dragons and having it chase me was exciting though, excellent use of music and posturing. The way it sort of glared at me for a bit before deciding I looked edible and then darting through the water with just its eyes glowing was excellent. Looking forward to actually being able to fight big stuff eventually.

If greatswords function the same way like in MHP, then I'm going to main those from now on once I get my copy of MH3. I love 'accidentally' swinging allies out of harm's way.

The review from Famitsu is finally out, and it got a perfect 10/10/10/10. Not really surprised, they looooove this series.

I know that ragging on Famitsu reviews is practically a hobby of its own these days, but I just have to ask - is it just me, or have they given out more perfect scores recently than they did a few years ago? DQ 9 got a 40/40, as did 428 / Shibuya for the Wii. I seem to recall at least one other thing getting it as well.

They certainly do.. 11 perfect games in their 20 odd years history and most of them are given out in recent years. As mush as I love MH3 it's far from being a perfect game, if anything MHP2g/MHFU is more deserving.

It's no surprise that Famitsu are being paid to give these games a 40/40. Stuff like The Last Remnant gets a 38 while foreign reviewers give it a 6/10. Their reasoning is that "Americans do not think of what others would like, only what they like" which is hilariously offensive compared to their reasoning of "Japanese reviewers try to think of others".

But you're talking about a site that gave Shooting Love 200X and Death Smiles the exact same scores, and some Naruto fighting game a 36 while Street Fighter 4 only received a 34. It's bullshit, basically. I wish there was something that could be done about it, since people take Famitsu's scores to heart, but they're worthless these days. 428 is a freaking.. what, movie with selectable paths? ANYONE could have made that "game". There are far better games out there with way more effort put into them and they don't have 40/40 scores.

Anyway, MHFU: I just beat Blangonga and am now HR2. I only had 11 minutes left on the clock.. something tells me I'm underpowered. I'm using a Venom Lance and the full Hermitaur set. I plan on going through 3* now and trying out Basarios as welll, since the next lance upgrade I want requires his skin/pelt/whatever.

I'm about 9 hours in now, mostly done with the 2-star quests. So now I can say this with confidence: despite the fact that I'm doing the exact same thing over again and again, I'm still having fun. It reminds me a lot of the Phantasy Star Online games (which I kind of figured it would), and that's mostly a good thing. There's a ton of extra stuff to do in town, although I'm still uncertain as to how much impact it really has. Beating dinosaurs with random stuff is quite entertaining, and now that I'm willing to just zip through the less interesting quests (earlier I tried to get all the subs done every time, now I'll just pass if I'm not feeling so inclined) the pace is definitely better.

Still not sure when I'll fight the big stuff though. Soon-ish maybe.
