Tasty Static - amazing (and frustrating) SkyRoads clone

Post by worstplayer »

Platformer/racing game responsible for many smashed keyboards in MS DOS days is back with better graphics, better sound, and same insanely infuriating gameplay. And it's freeware.

I remember playing something just like the SkyRoads shareware (have the same disc I got it off of). It was pretty fun; I wonder if they were going for an "I, Robot" kind of look consciously (like the action better though). I don't remember such a big HUD as shown on this page, but the Bluemoon name sounds familiar and the title screenshot too.

Now if only somebody would do the same for Kroz and...well, no, this is better. :D

Edit: Yay, ship colors unlocked. The game crashed on me once though.

I recall seeing the cool Atari Games' I, Robot upright at my local arcade when it first made it's debut. You could even try your hand at "Doodle City" to pass the time away at the expense of a single credit, of course. It was considered the world's first 3-D polygonal based arcade game...precursor to Hard Drivin' and Racing Drivin' games that came later on. ^_~

Too bad they had to redesign the VSLI chips to make it "cheaper" to produce (which actually made it far less reliable and ultimately more expensive overall, whoops).

On Tasty Static - I got to the second level of the group with gravity-switchers - pretty quickly, but that was maddening. I'll try it again to see if I can at least get FPS mode.

Man, I thought I'd be asleep before 4AM today. Nope, this is addictive. Also, I've been making my own very difficult level. I finished it 3 times, all out of pure luck.

Also, http://www.hummezum.hu/swfroads/.

EDIT: Got FPS mode, it's really only a different camera, but it's really fun to use on the levels with a lot of jumping from platform to platform [like Captain Static - 1].
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
