I just bought a Gamecube with Metroid Prime and F-Zero GX. I was worried that I would have problems with the system and games being used, but everything seems to work fine. "Why not buy a Wii?" you may ask.

a) I don't have $250 to blow on a new system
b) I am waiting for the price drop and all the bugs to be worked out
c) I'm not ready for a weird-o controller just yet
d) I want to play the new Zelda with a traditonal controller
e) I missed out on Nintendo's little wonder 8)
f) Even if I did have the cash, you can't find em' in stores anymore.

I haven't dug too deep into my two "new" games yet, but I've heard F-Zero GX is pretty damn hard (but that's how I like my games  ) and Metroid Prime is just plain awesome.

You all are probably going to tell me to hunt down Ikaruga. I might, but I have played it before and while I dig the color-switching scheme, I found the scoring system to be way too anal (relies too much on chaining).

Obviously, it's nothing special gameplay wise as it's just hyper grainy fmv backdrops with flat-shaded polygonal enemies you shoot with your one laser weapon but just the simple fact that i get to own such a rare game out of the Galaxian/Galaga/Gaplus series is really cool. It's actually kind of fun to play a little too - it has a cool feel to it, it's just overly simplistic. I haven't played the Zolgear part yet...

EDIT - i just read that it's less ugly than Project Dragoon and that the disc is unfortunatley missing a third episode that was produced.
Actually Zolgear is not on the PSX port. It's an exclusive episode called Rising of Gourb.

I have never heard of that one. Is that the only other episode? i.e. core game, Zolgear, and Gourb?

Yeah. Project Dragoon and Rising of Gourb are on the PSX port, Zolgear is arcade only.
On a related note, there was a PAL conversion of Galaxian^3 which has English voices but the framerate is 25fps. It's probably only worth it to hear Gourb's voices (the female voice sounds like Carrie Savage)

I went on a small retro game shopping spree a month ago. Out of the games I bought I've mostly given time to Elemental Master, Truxton, Contra Hard Corps, and Chakan for GEN and Darius Gaiden and In The Hunt for SAT.

Batsugun Special I guess.

What constitutes "old"? Pre-PS2?

All 6 NES Megaman games [well, I played the Japanese version of the first, but it's the same game really as the US version].
I suck at them all, 'cept MM2, because that's the only one I used to play loads.

That one part with the bloody instakill beams in 6 hates me.
Mega Man 1 truly hates me, I couldn't even get past the first screen of Elecman. I've always hated those spinny things, and the fact that it's the only game with different physics [even though it's only so slight, just a little bit more sliding inertia] than the others doesn't help much.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Heh the time stopping gun "f" is best for the beam level.

Anyway, I just got the Nintendo version of Tetris ,Gyruss, Sky Shark and Defender II for NES. Man I LOVE Play 'N Trade. They are practically giving away Nintendo games for around $2.50.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

With football season approaching I'm playing some Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES. If you're into emulation there are also tons of mods out there and the community support for this game is impressive. I'm currently messing with an NCAA mod, updated NFL roster mod, and a CFL (ha!) mod.

There are also numerous leagues for online play, but I'm not quite that committed.

Twinbee [NES] and Recca. Twinbee is ridiclously easy, and Recca is impossibly fast. Both are gobs of fun.
Also, some Megaman 2 and 5, I suck at every MM game except 2 still... still need to get past those beams. I beat Flashman though [easiest boss EVER], so I have the time stop thing to make my life easier.

Also, does F-Zero X count as old?
Anyway, I keep dieing right on the last bloody lap of half the races... and for some reason, on this box, the machine select screen drags the emulation down to 50% speed, but is totally fine past that... same graphics problems as my old machine though [and on that machine, it didn't have the machine select slowdown]... stupid Intel video...
