Flat Sound on Astro City?

Post by Jockel »

Hey guys i just received my first candy and i noticed that it has a really flat sound.
Can the Speakers be busted or is one of the connectors probably a bit dodgy?
It has no bass at all. I don't think it's supposed to be like this.

Congrats, now you are a man 8)

Well the Egret 2s have a flat sound too. I just put a Logitech subwoofer in each of my cabs.
Just check AO for more information.

I dunno man... it's REALLY flat.

Unlikely, but it's possible the speaker polarity is wrong. Worth checking.

Cabs don't tend to have the worlds greatest audio setups. That they make noises at the player in a noisy, crowded arcade is enough.

I've been looking to upgrade the speakers in my cabs (http://www.arcadeotaku.com/forum/viewto ... ade#p47104 ) but since I bought unshielded speakers (intentionally) it's dragged on a bit.

Yes, that's possible. If the polarity is wrong a lot frequencies get lost due to cancellation.

Hmm, the speakers are normally quite okay. I wouldn't change those. Without a subwoofer you won't ever get decent sound out of such a cab though. The sub isn't needed to get really deep home cinema like sound. You will need those alone, to get the 80-200hz range acceptable. My cabs don't shake the room either, they just got more depths to their sound.

I've not seen anyone trying with good speakers, so it's worthwhile my time just to find out :) I resolutely refuse to add a sub to a cab that never had one in the first place though :)

I've played a few Atari Games' Space Duel cabinets (circa 1982) that have had a cool subwoofer placed inside them at some local arcades back in the early 1980s. Same thing with the Bally Midway's 1982 Tron upright as well. Gives it that added punchy bass that is missing for added dramatic effect. ^_~

Could this be caused by plugging in the speaker connector (you know, the one which goes from the front cover frame) upside down or something? I rotated the screen before i tested it, and after rotating i might have plugged it in the wrong way...
Sorry i'm a zero at this stuff ^^

Yup, that'd do it. I'd be surprised if you'd managed that though :)

I have two Astros and I wrestled with this for a long time. I finally found a solution.

You can thank me later!

I was thinking of upgrading the speakers in my Astro's with these:

However, these are 4 Ohm and the original Sega speakers are 8 Ohm, so I'd have to wire them in series.... I think.
