New Title/Info
(Unconfirmed)

Gladiator - PSP
R-TYPE TACTICS 2 - PSP
Shin Sangoku Musou Multi Raid Special - 360/PS3
Discipline: Birth of Empire - Wii (?)
Hopefully it pans out. R-Type Tactics / Command was pretty fun, and better than I expected.

I would gladly buy an R-Type Command 2 on either UMD or as a download.

edit:!
R-TYPE TACTICSⅡ -Operation BITTER CHOCOLATE-

....interesting name
Out 10/29
5040 Yen retai/3800 Yen download

!!

confirmed? I'd say so
More R-Type Command for PSP
Sequel promises more strategy and downloadable missions.
by John Tanaka

July 29, 2009 - Did you enjoy the strategic gameplay of R-Type Command? Then get ready for more! Famitsu reports that R-Type is coming back to the PSP, and once again its in the form of a strategy game rather than a shooter.

Titled R-Type Tactics II (in Japan, the original was known as R-Type Tactics), the new game will arrive in Japan through Irem on October 29. Players can look forward to a branching story line based off the selections you make during the game. Irem is also upping the content and strategy, with double the units and additional commands.

Multiple players will be able to take part in the fun again. The game promises ad-hoc battles along with cooperative missions. Additionally, the game will support game sharing for competitive play, just in case you don't have enough copies to go around.

Irem is also planning something new for the game: downloadable missions. It's unclear at present if these will be paid or free.

Tactics II will be released simultaneously as a retail and download game. The retail version will run 5,040 yen with the download version going for 3,800 yen. Those who buy the retail version will be given a bonus soundtrack.

R-Type Command Sequel Announced
R-Type Tactics II powers-up the original.
By Kevin Gifford, 07/29/2009

Irem Software Engineering announced in Japan this week that a sequel to portable strategy game R-Type Command is in the works. The wondrously-titled R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate is due out for the PSP in Japan on October 29 for 5040 yen; no US release details have been announced.

Previous R-Type titles have chronicled the battle between the human race and the mysterious Bydo aliens. This one takes a detour by depicting a war between two human factions -- the people of Earth, who have continued to develop the Bydo weapons they've seized from the enemy, and the Granzela Revolutionary Army, who resist Bydo-tech and instead have worked on their own weapon tree.

The gameplay of R-Type Tactics 2 will be largely the same as before -- the battlefield is a chunk of side-view space, and you move units around and issue orders in order to defeat the enemy fleet. There are over 200 units in this game, double what was available in Command, and you'll have a few extra abilities up your sleeve, like the power to seize enemy ships and send jamming signals to confuse enemy squadrons.

More as it comes.

I'd still prefer a new R-Type side scrolling shmup game, but I do love Tactics / Command more than Final, so I'll import Tactics II if I have to. I hope I can just buy it as Command 2, domestically.

The PSP has some strong strategy titles already. Hopefully this will add to the list.

I didn't find it nearly as fun as the Human side. Spamming Gains was amusing for a while, however. I found the Midnight Eyes, Striders, Future Worlds, and Tropical Angels much more fun to play with.

Hopefully this gets translated by Atlus again. R-Type Command is still one of my favorite tools against insomnia. I'm happy to invest in a sequel, if it helps me fall asleep even faster.

It's really hard for me to say this and make it sound non-fanboyish, but I'd be more excited about this were it on any other system. The first one had waaay too much loading time (unless you skipped all the battle animations, yes, I know) and I can't help but feel it wouldn't have that were it on the DS. I say "any other system" but the only other one I can even visualize it on is the DS.

Still, nice to see the first one did well enough sales-wise to warrant a sequel. Maybe there's hope for another shmup in the series yet...

R-Type IV would be welcome too.

Also, down with "emotive shmups." I hate them and I don't even play 'em

Well, any besides Taito and Konami ones, I mean.

I hope the Ragnarok shows up this time. Complete with two wave cannons and the choice between 3 forces, rather than the neutered version from Final.

I translated the "trailer" for those of you wondering if they make any mention of chocolate in it:

1: The Earth was once on the verge of annihilation
2: by unknown life beings that appeared from a distant place in space.
3: For the sake of survival, Humanity
4: obtained the devil's weapon.
5: People used this weapon freely
6: and escaped from the crisis.
7: ...Suposedly.
8: And then... using the weapon intended to shoot the demons,
9: people started to fight among themselves.
10: The fight is continuing even this very moment.
11: The little girl looks up towards the starry sky and asks
12: Who will end this fight for us?
13: The stars didn't give her any answer.

Edit: the devil's weapon refers to the Force.

Nice work, thanks very much.

At the end of the trailer, it seemed like there was a 3rd party, perhaps an alien force (or the Bydo)
observing the battle between the two human sides from a distance.

Just finished translating the story from Irem's website. I also did some looking around and uncovered some new stuff. I have to point out, though, that I never finished the first game, so I'm not aware of everything that is new or that may be old.

"Formerly, Humanity entrusted its last hope and few remaining forces to a young commander and sent him deep into the Bydo's territory.

As the years and months passed, the number of Bydo forces that appeared in the Solar System continued to decrease. Humanity, at last, delighted in the coming of peaceful days.

However, that didn't last long.

During their long fight, Humanity developed the Force System, which used the Bydo itself as Humanity's weapon, in order to oppose the mighty and fiendish Bydo forces. However, even after few battles with the Bydo forces occurred, Humanity could not relinquish this formidable weapon.

The public's opinion about the Bydo weapons was divided in two. One group advocated the development and maintenance of Bydo weapons as preparation for invasions from unknown enemies and the other, that the Bydo weapons should be disposed of. The two views didn't go along well and confrontation grew.

Then, ironically, Humanity started to fight itself.

Humanity divided in two, continued to develop new weapons and steal each other's lives. They entered deep into battle and war spread throughout the Solar System.

The fight of Humanity with itself grows more gruesome each day. Right now, nobody has noticed the great crisis that is once again approaching the Solar System."

There will be three factions in the game: the "Earth Alliance Army," the "Guranzeera Revolutionary Army" and the Bydo. The EAA has no qualms about using Forces so their units will be Force focused. In contrast, the GRA opposes the use of Force. To compensate, they have abilities like Capture to control weakened enemy ships and Jamming to reduce the enemies' field of vision. The Bydo will probably just play like the good old Bydo. Irem claims that there'll be 2x the amount of units in the game.

I'll post more once I uncover more.

Also, forgot to mention Base Building. It's listed under new commands so I guess it's not just a big ship you can purchase and deploy.

I feel like kissing my PSP now.

I find it kind of sad that we won't see any other R-Type shooters again, but Strategy games instead... though I am still grateful for the franchise to live on.

It could very well be that R-Type Dimensions, the graphical remake of R-Type and R-Type II on XBLA, is the last traditional R-Type shmup release. I hope that's not the case, but could accept it.

With that said, I LIKE the R-Type Tactics / Command series...and I can call it a series now, with the existance of the first sequel/follow-up. Perhaps it'll become as much-loved as Hudson's Nectaris / Military Madness series one day.

You can finally d/l the CGI trailer of R-Type Tactics II - Operation Bitter Chocolate on the Japanese PSN site -- it's been up as of 8/13/2009. It is a 176MB file (with an overall running time of 2 minutes and 41 seconds) and plays at 1280 x 720 in progressive scan as well. Save it on your PS3's HDD for posterity. Much better to view it in 720p on a HDTV monitor setup ftw rather than on youtube. ^_~

I'm really excited about this game, I've been an RType nerd since I was like 8 and still play Command against my brother.

The switch to a strategy game was really nice after Final - it was pretty sad having all kinds of really interesting ships, scouts and long-range bombers and stuff, without having even multi-player to let you pretend there's some sort of military strategy going on. All of the ships and backstory they've developed for the RType setting is getting better use in a strategy game.

I geek out playing through the remakes of levels from the shmups in the strategy game, it's good to see more on the screen shots.

I'd love to see a new 2d RType shooter that takes some of the ideas from Command, like bombers not sucking and choosing flagships... big cruisers would give more fighters, but smaller ones will give you checkpoints and support deeper in the level.
